Super Mega Ultra Pi Boy 64 Thingy Build

So I had been looking (again!) into getting a Gameboy Light, but just like before, found that they are still expensive and mostly in bad condition.

I recently found a Gameboy at Goodwill for $5.00, but the battery had leaked and the PCB was not salvageable.

Anyways, long story short, I started working on incorporating a Raspberry Pi with the Gameboy. I had seen some done in the past and this looked like a great little project to get involved with.

Here's the complete detail with some overview videos, build log and everything I went through to get it built.

Nice! I considered getting a Pi for some retro stuff, I didn't realize it was that capable. Does it run hot in that small case?

You know you can get DIY backlight kits for the Gameboy right? Pretty cheap and easy too.

Huh ... kinda crazy how modern the Game Boy looks without that dark grey border around the screen.

This is pretty cool!
Next step: build an SD card into a Game Boy cartridge that you can plug into the back and take out to put on a computer for new games. :D

I'm surprised at the power you can get out of Raspberry Pi. I've seen people have HD media centers ran on them. Only in 1080P video does it start to have some slowdown. Looks like the thing can run most games just fine up to 2000, or so. And if you want to emulate other games, there's other more powerful SoCs out there.
