seriously slacked... meaning I haven't played any of these in over a month. Here's what I can say so far:
Aliens Versus Predator - I played a half hour. It looks cool. I'll most likely get back to it soon.
Batman Arkham Asylum - Played over an hour. Mostly think it sucks. Feels so clunky to me. I might give it another shot, but not high on my list.
Dragon's Lair - Haven't touched it.
Fallout - Fired it up, no idea what was happening, shut it down. Need to RTFM first.
Loom - Haven't touched it.
Metal Slug 3 - Made an a solo attempt and co-op attempt w/ my wife. Plan to keep trying.
Phantasy Star IV - Haven't touched it. Would like to soon.
Sonic 3 And Knuckles - Played a couple hours. Honestly thinking it's my least favorite of the original trilogy by a longshot. The levels feel so big and confusing.
Tomb Raider Anniversary - Played 20 hours according to Steam, but some of that was idle for sure. But... man. I loved it, but I'm about halfway and it's discouraging to know there's so much left to do. Really good game, but feels to long/difficult.
Wonder Boy In Monster World - Played 3 or 4 hours. Really don't see the hype. I'd take Zelda II over this any day. Controls feel so weird. Combat feels like 50/50 I'll hit. Meh.

Time for Phantasy Star IV...
Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
You might try running through some of the challenge rooms first. It took me a bit to get used to the flow of combat before it clicked, but then I thought it was awesome. Dave also hates these games, so I guess if you want to be like Dave *shrug*noiseredux wrote:Batman Arkham Asylum - Played over an hour. Mostly think it sucks. Feels so clunky to me. Aliens Versus Predator
Batman Arkham Asylum
Dragon's Lair
Fallout
Loom
Metal Slug 3
Phantasy Star IV
Sonic 3 And Knuckles
Tomb Raider Anniversary
Wonder Boy In Monster World
Dragon's Lair down. It sucked. I mean, it's awesome historically. But just a jerk of a game. Glad to get something scratched off the list. Maybe motivation to pick this back up.
I mean Dave said Shovel Knight was "not a GOTY candidate, sorry." How lame is that?

I really, really liked Arkham Asylum when I played it earlier this year. Certainly, it took me some time to get used to the controls, but once I did, it felt awesome. I also thought that the setting was fantastic, and the plot is as good as any of the classic Batman story arcs.noiseredux wrote:well, NOBODY wants to be like Dave... maybe I'll give it another shot.Stark wrote: You might try running through some of the challenge rooms first. Yeah, as cheesy as it sounds, it felt like you were Batman. I also liked the atmosphere and plot and thought that it was really interesting throughout. I'm seriously looking forward to Arkham Knight.prfsnl_gmr wrote:I really, really liked Arkham Asylum when I played it earlier this year. Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
Arkham Asylum's combat has more in common with PaRappa the Rapper than Streets of Rage. It's all about timing.
When I originally tried the demo (way before it came out), I thought it was awful. When I played the game, finally. Once I got the timing down, it really felt nice. Combat isn't suppose to be technical in the game. It's suppose to flow.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
Geeked out on Skies for the last couple of days. I was getting worried it was going to get a bit formulaic (town, pre-dungeon, dungeon, boss battle, airship battle, Gigas battle) but the team split up for a bit and we went treasure hunting so that was cool. I still have misgivings about save points though.
I experienced something I hadn't in a game for a while. I got to Nasrad, one of the bigger towns and just stopped to look around. The attention to detail is fabulous from the differences between the ships in the harbour telling you from where they hail, stacked crates full of fruit and veg ready for export and to slightly brash soldiers guarding the streets. It feels lived in and real like Star Wars or a good Ghibli movie. If it wasn't for the giant genocidal robots and evil flying Spaniards I'd move in tomorrow.
I hate to hark on it again, but one of the reasons FFXIII repulsed me so much was its lack of towns and NPC's. I feel that towns are as integral to a RPG's structure as well as to its texture. They inform the player it's time to have a rest, to explore without fear of battle and not to worry about stats for a minute or twenty. When you don't get that, as in FFXIII, it just feels like you're being pushed from one cut-scene to the next and it feels gross.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
The world of Skies of Arcadia is amazing. Love that game so much, it's like one of the last "classic" JRPGs to be released on a home console.
