3rd Party N64 Memory Card question about the insides

Post by MyNameIsVince »

OK so yesterday I made a trade with a guy. I traded my Saturn with hookups, 1 controller, and a couple of games and got some stuff in return (I'll post a pic of that later). One of the items that I got in return (and one that he insisted on giving me) was a 3rd party memory card for the N64, this one:

So I open it up, and the inside looks like this:

My question (as n00b as it sounds), is what the hell is that stuff on the sides on the board? That can't be part of the actual assembly of the memory card. Here's more angles:

If this were a 1st party memory card (er, controller pak), I would have dismissed it as some sort of excess....whatever it is....glue?....paste?....silicon? that somebody put in there, but..... in this case of the 3rd party memory card, was it done by somebody who tampered with it after buying it? Or was it done by the manufacturers themselves as part of the process? Maybe I'm overthinking this, but an answer or two might help. Anyone?

Looks like the glue is to keep the PCB anchored to the memory cart shell. I doubt it was used as a tamper deterrence, since the board can easily be pried off. Maybe to assist in stabilizing the contacts when plugged into the controller? Think of it as a last disassembly step of are you sure you want to change the battery and lose all your saves.

It's just hot glue to either keep the board from rattling around in the case or as a step to make things easier on the assembly line.

Looks like hot glue. It could have been factory, I've seen stuff like that before. Or, a previous owner could have done it (possibly to keep the PCB from rattling inside the shell). I have that exact card, and I bought it myself brand new. If I remember when I get home I'll open it up and let you know if mine has that too.

Huh, I used to have that same card when I had my N64. Never knew it was filled with precious goo.
