Sam,
I've helped a few racketeers with their resume, and they all seemed to really like my work. And I'm very proud of my work, so if you'd like, shoot me a PM and I can get to work on yours.
Free professional help, why turn it down?
Smile: New cufflinks and a white silk pocket square for the event at the Art Museum tonight. Can not wait to take pictures and share them, even if taken with a mobile phone.
My wife tried on her cocktail dress and holy smokes does she look gorgeous. And that was without makeup nor doing her hair (she doesn't need makeup to be beautiful). She will drop jaws tonight.
Everything, so far, is going exactly as planned. Will definitely be a night to remember, which is why I put in so much work. I just hope the museum is packed and that our crooner shows up.
Speaking of, I could easily replace him as he's an ass to work with, as I can sing and play piano all day long, but I'm set as a greeter. As a fail safe in case the dude doesn't show up, I brought in a slew of Rat Pack member CD's. Weird how "ancient" CD's seem these days. Even weirder is that I told the CEO "I have more records than CD's". But no way am I bringing my wheels of steel out in the rain.
Frown: It's raining, flash flood style. Having a red carpet grand entrance with "paparazzi" will be difficult to do if it's raining kittens and puppies.
Either way, when I delivered my appetizers today the secretary (who looks so much like Winny Cooper) said "well I'll work, but I'm getting drunk", so booze is an option for every volunteer. I don't drink to get drunk, but I will not turn down a dirty martini. She suggested "just tell the bartender to use a cup and not a martini glass. One, you won't confuse your drink, two no one will know you are getting hammered".
The event is from 6-8, so after 7 my wife and I are basically free to network and socialize. And the food! Three of our cities classiest restaurants are catering, plus my appetizers. And "cigarette" girls. C'mon. How awesome is that?
Sorry to ramble, but I'm so excited about this event as I've worked long and hard (ho ho, long and hard) on this and can't wait to see how much money we raise, and how much fun people will have.

Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
I think it depends on the job you're applying for and how long and potentially impressive your work history is. You want to highlight previous job experience that directly pertains to the position you're applying for, and in my field it's very common for people to hop jobs every few years to experience new problems. So if I'm interviewing a 15 year industry vet he'll need a multi-page just to list out the places he's worked with a couple of bullet points each.fastbilly1 wrote:Agreed in part.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Personally, I don't think that a resumé should ever be longer than a single page.samsonlonghair wrote:Is there any truth to the addage that a resumé should be one page? I have used that old-fashioned guide for a long time, but I have found as much bad advice for resumé writing as good. I'm afraid I've made a bad resumé.
I keep a one page resume and a multipage resume ready. I only send out the single page one but I have had several companies ask for an extended resume in the past, so I will send the the multipage one. It just has more things like work awards and achievements, more references, and details about different skills.

From my understanding, the one page resume is the old way of thinking that has been made mostly obsolete by the digital world. It used to be 1 page on nice paper as one always used to hand them out physically. Most of the time now, resumes are submitted electronically and the 1 page requirement isnt applicable any longer.
You put down general experience, education, and expertise/certs on the first, and then follow up with more detailed and descriptive work experience.

This seems definitely true in our field at least. Yeah thats how it is in energy engineering sector. I think my resume is 3 1/2 pages. My buddy recently was looking for a job with what I felt was a weak 1 page only resume. I fixed it up for him and expanded it to 2 pages. He was hired by the next place he applied.Stark wrote:This seems definitely true in our field at least. Just goes to show that different fields need different things. In the sales world, my boss throws out any resume over two pages, and rarely reads past the first page. Now if he thinks someone is a good fit, he checks the persons Linkedin. Granted in our two markets, there are only so many people who sell what we sell so its not like it is hard to find someone who knows the person.
Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
Exactly why you need a one pager and an expanded resume.
A solid cover letter and a one pager gets you in the door. An expanded resume can seal the deal. Depends on not only the industry, but the company, straight down to head of HR.
And as far as "the digital world", if you need a job you need to get your ass on foot and network. Handshake > Email. You can send over 100 resumes in a minute, and HR directors know it. Meet people. Attend events. Don't sit your ass next to your computer, rather make a connection.
Unless you don't like people. Then stay at home at hope for the best.

There is no way to meet the person you need to unless you attend a career fair or have met them previously at a work function. And when you do meet these people, they dont want you to hand them any paperwork. If they are interested they may pass their card to you for you to email them your resume.
Ive done the phone call thing where I will get numbers of dept managers and call them up and thus bypassing HR. That can be successful if it doesnt piss them off lol.

F2F > digital
It's the 80/20 rule. If you can meet with someone you are much more likely to get an interview. Digital is static and you can't show your true personality with an email.
I guess if you are just a cog, so be it. But most HR dudes want to know a bit more about you than an online application and resume.

So yall know, typically if you social engineer someones phone number and call them directly and bypass HR, it wont get you the job. Granted I did get a parttime job at a security company by showing up at the guys desk in his secured facility during the middle of the day when we had a meeting and without him knowing I was in the building. I honestly did not mean to do it, I just walked in behind someone, the secretary did not say anything, and I found my way to his office.Jmustang1968 wrote:Ive done the phone call thing where I will get numbers of dept managers and call them up and thus bypassing HR.
