What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

A friend of mine ruined the original film for me. He hyped it up as the best film ever as kept saying "You'll never get the twist".

That made me figure out the twist in the first half hour and killed any tension.

Great performances throughout the movie though, and much more concise than the novel.
I liked the movie a whole lot more than the book, but that's mostly a personal thing.

It would be hard for me to explain what I always liked about the movie without a rewatch, its been a while.

BogusMeatFactory wrote::evil: Started my first real day in the retail department I was assigned. I had been working this past week as a cashier and it has been exhausting. So I am working in the electronics department and met some of my co-workers. Let's talk about Guy (not his real name). Guy is a 20-something who was showing me around on how to work our photo equipment and setting up mounted photos and picture frames and on and on. Or at least, he was supposed to.

Instead, I was subjected to some of the most frustrating conversations I have ever had. The kid talked about his D&D campaigns and his GURPS campaigns where he was the coolest and most powerful being on Earth as I feigned interest. We are talking about going into in depth detail about what advantages and disadvantages he picked, how that affected all of his stats as well as the GURPS mechanics on Mechs. We are talking hair pulling stuff hair.

When I finally get a word in and say I have an interest in video games, he goes on to tell me he is a master at video games and how he knows everything there is to know about videogames. He talks about his love for Blizzard and how Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 are some of the best games ever made and how it is a shame that someone would like me would like Diablo 2 over Diablo 3.

I mention I love fighting games and talk about Virtua Fighter, only to be cut off and told that Mortal Kombat is the best fighting game ever, next to DragonBallZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (a fun game..but not a great fighting game) and how he is a world tournament champion in DBZ and about how he beat the previous champion with freaking Mr. Satan.

I tell him some of my favorite games, Shenmue, Shadow of the Colossus and Riven: the Sequel to Myst and his response is, "Never heard of those."

He then talks about how he loves Sonic the Hedgehog and how they are all awesome. I responded with, "After Sonic '06, you can't get any worse," and low and behold..he had never heard of the Sonic the Hedgehog game where he kisses a human.

He then tells me how I can't be a true gamer if I don't play Starcraft 2 because all the real gamers out there play StarCraft 2.

Oh.....his favorite movie director? MICHAEL BAY! He is so excited for TMNT movie and he thinks that Donatello looks BADASS!? I also told him Michael Bay is not directing TMNT and is only a producer and he told me I needed to get my facts straight.

He went to great lengths to explain to me how the Transformers moves were some of the best action sequences in the history of film and how the 4th movie did a great job in rebooting the franchise.......
I was expecting Sonic '06 to be his favorite, but I guess no human being is truly that unbelievable.

Reminds me of a few different people I knew over time unfortunately. I don't care about people having different tastes in things of course, but it really bugs me when somebody thinks they can tell me how to properly enjoy my own hobbies.

I see this in the geek culture all the time and it is incredibly frustrating. It is like some social outcasts attempt to lay claim to social superiority in their circles. This guy truly wanted me to idolize him and worship him. I know his heart is in the right place and he probably isn't a bad person, but I always feel that some people constantly try to impress and do so with outright lies or in strange ways, like in his case, talking about how indestructible his GURPS Mech creations were.

It's ok...I don't need to be impressed, I just want people to be themselves.

My view is that you should have a minimum of six months in the "oh shit" fund. We currently have alittle over thirteen months in ours (it was our mortgage account and it is what we had left after fixing things on the house). We can live at the level we do now for about a year if for some reason we both lost our jobs. Now if we get our mortgage close to being paid off, we may dip into the fund to pay off the rest - but that is a down the road plan.

Smiled - Last night my mother in law showed up at our house with a nice fancy charcoal grill. It has all sorts of bells and whistles, like adjustable height firebox and almost 400inches of cook space. Which means we now have a meat grill and a corn grill. Then we went to a friend of my wife's house for dinner last night, homemade enchiladas and refried beans.

Ticked - Bought Talisman Prologue on my phone thinking it was the full game, nope just a "quest" system, aka how you play the game. Waste of money.

Consider the Asheville, NC area. There is a university there (UNC Asheville), and tourism is a large part of the area's economy. Also, it is just the coolest city, and I would love to live there.
Cool, I have started looking for jobs in Asheville. Nothing yet. I'll keep looking.
Luke wrote:Sam,
I agree: check out Asheville. The city is like a mini San Fransisco in mountain territory. Beautiful weather, delicious food, and an explosion of art and things to do.
Job advice: Always keep a list of achievements. Place that list with your resume.
Is there any truth to the addage that a resumé should be one page? I have used that old-fashioned guide for a long time, but I have found as much bad advice for resumé writing as good. I'm afraid I've made a bad resumé.

I was speaking of Greenville, SC it is a really beautiful and well planned city with plenty of opportunities in tourism and graphic design (Clemson, live theater, big downtown area with weekly events, etc..) being able to take lunch in Falls Park would be an amazing perk in itself. There are plenty of surrounding areas such as Powdersville that provide some suburb type areas for lower cost of living while remaining quite close to the main attraction.

As for Richmond, I am not sure if the river is viable for transportation. The family member I mentioned actually works in a building that sits on a crossover road and has a view of the river head on from his window. He seems to like it. The neighborhood they live in has some beautiful Victorian style homes. I will ask him about the river next we speak and let you know.

I have to also +1 Asheville, I also have extended family in that area and from my short visits it has been lovely. Not to mention it still has mountains, always a big plus in my book.

Savannah, GA deserves a hat in the ring as well based on your criteria. Hard to beat for scenery. Living in the historic district would be amazing, but not at all cheap. Employment prospects are pretty strong if you have proper qualifications. Tourism is a big deal.
Thanks, jp1. I looked into jobs at Clemson. Nothing there for me. I'll keep looking around the Carolinas. I see a few good jobs in my field in Atlanta, but not in Savannah. I'll keep looking.

I appreciate you guys for making helpful suggestions.

Personally, I don't think that a resumé should ever be longer than a single page.

Agreed in part.

I keep a one page resume and a multipage resume ready. I only send out the single page one but I have had several companies ask for an extended resume in the past, so I will send the the multipage one. It just has more things like work awards and achievements, more references, and details about different skills.

Since I spend a lot of my time arguing semantics, I must state that I would consider the former a resumé and the latter a curriculum vitae... I do agree, however, that when you are job hunting it is best to keep both on hand (along with a versatile, well-written, form cover letter).

In any event, please keep us updated on the job search, samsonlonghair. If you end up in the Carolinas, then we should certainly meet up (for some game hunting) at some point. (Also, have you considered Charlotte? While it is probably not as desirable a place to live as Asheville, I have enjoyed living here. Moreover, it certainly has a lot more job opportunities.)
