What is the homebrew channel?

Post by RCBH928 »

please help me

My brain got fried trying to understand what is the twilight hack and the homebrew channel. At first I thought the Homebrew channel can only run emulation. So here is what I understand.

*You need SD card to save the homebrew channel and its apps
*You need twilight princess FOR ONCE to install the homebrew channel, then no need to do the hack again

Now here is what I don't get:
*Does it work with update version 3.4 , and if not what is my chances?
*Does it really play DVD's?
*Does this hack play Wii backups? If so , why is there modchips then?
*Do you pay for the apps or are they free?
*How do you get games for the emulators like 64 and SNES?
*Are the emulated games are just as good as VC titles?

Sorry but I really got lost i have been searching for the last 2 hours having hard time understanding what is this really

The homebrew channel is just a framework to run unofficial software on your Wii. By itself it doesn't do anything very special. It merely runs other software for you. That software is pretty much limitless - it could be anything from emulators to DVD playing software to anything else you could want.

Some reading for you:

homebrew is the BOMB. really it isn't anything too great, but for someone like me with a tight budget and school coming up I cant spend $8-$10 on genesis/snes/whatever games on the VC it is essential and just plain awesome.
....plus Ive waited fucking like 2 years for them to put Earthbound on the VC and it has yet to happen. therefore, homebrew win hands down. now you can enjoy those rare/import games on your tv screen and not your dinky computer monitor (if your monitor is like mine)

Yes and yes

Yes it works but you'll have to downgrade afterwards to run apps

Apps are free, don't get scammed into paying for anything. Yes there's a DVD player but it's a little tricky. The emulation is 100%, you can "inject" ROMs and turn them into Channels much like if you downloaded them from WiiShop. All of the info can be found on the previously posted Homebrew Channel link.

As for the Wii Backup Loader. It's still very much in its infancy state, but the compatibility is through the roof. Why are there modchips? Funny question. There wouldn't be any of this homebrew stuff if people didn't come up with WiiKey in the first place. Anyway you'll get better result with them than the loader. An issue with the loader right now is that your DVDs have to be burned with DVD-ROM booktype, which not every burner can accomplish (bitsetting).

You will have to downgrade to firmware version 3.2 after you initially do the Twilight Hack...you can search around google for the instructions.

You can damage you Wii by begin an idiot...you have been warned.

*Does it really play DVD's? - Yes, see this link for a list of applications that support this; http://wiibrew.org/wiki/List_of_homebre ... 28media%29

*Does this hack play Wii backups? If so , why is there modchips then? - You can play backups through the Gamma backup loader. The main perk of installing a modchip is you're able to load backups from the Disc Channel and you don't have to worry about an update from Nintendo ruining your modifications.

*How do you get games for the emulators like 64 and SNES? - You dump them yourself or you download them from the internet, just like with any other emulator.

*Are the emulated games are just as good as VC titles? - Better..most of the VC titles feature horrible emulation.

if you install modchip, nintendo firmware updates does not hurt your system?

To add further to the confusion I beleive that some of the nintendo updates will stop the chip from working which will do more damage to the system than the homebrew channel, which at the end of the day is completely reversible.

To try and add some more clarity:

The Twilight Hack only needs to be performed once to instal the HBC which can then be used to load homebrew games or emulators or whatever.

I'm not sure if the HBC will load software of a disk or not, I've not tried, but it will load software of the SD card or a PC app called wiiload can push software over your wifi connection.

There is a wealth of stuff out there already from versions of Pong, Quake (with full on wii IR controls - awesome), various emulators and a nifty app to change the region of the wii so that you can run imports.

Some of the software you can load with the HBC will let you run iso's of full wii games, although as far as I know this is in its infancy and wont work with every game. I did this mod so that I get into writing homebrew and trying out stuff other people have done, not to run pirate copies but thats up to you.

This all might sound a bit too much, but get hold of TP and an SD card and get it installed.

this is very confusing indeed
use tp hack to run homebrew channel to run non-region and backup copies
yet nintendo updates can harm your system

if you install modchip, the nintendo update will also harm your system

people do a lot of those chips and tp hacks,
the modchip guys say so the update won't hurt their system(what about the modchip?)
the tp guys say so they don't have to damage their console by installation of extra equipement, yet tp system will also be hurt by the updates

its VERY confusing

btw, Why did the guy say the emulators from homebrew are better than VC?
