Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I have lots of love for Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine. But, I think they both have different strengths. Mario 64, the aspect of exploring and figuring out how to get stars is far superior to most of the Shine sprites in Sunshine.
However, Sunshine is a significantly more polished game with a richer world and more to do. The controls are so much better, it's not even humorous.
I love both games, for sure. And thankfully they're both, mostly, exploration based. Sunshine does have a good chunk of the stars rooted in "challenges". I'm not as fond of those missions in 3D Mario games.
I think Galaxy controls better than both of those, and 3D World, is seriously the most responsive 3D Mario game I've ever played. The controls in it feel "perfect". BUT, Both the Galaxy and 3D World games have little to no emphasis on exploration.
Hopefully, whatever they come up with next will be more balanced in that respect.

I personally disliked Sunshine's waterpark/holiday resort setting. It might be a more focused setting than the usual fire world, ice world, grass world level design, but I thought Delfino Plaza and its inhabitants were very off putting. It doesn't surprise me that Nintendo never revisited it.

Same, lol. Awkward is the word.

Odd I was just glad they visited something different when they did it(heck though the "usual setting" seems to overused in the games fire, water, earth, wind nice to see a change or at least feel like there's one). Probably like how everyone loved the wind waker style over past 3d styles(even if I'm not a big fan of it myself unless it's in 2d pixel art form like minish cap)

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I thought the fact that it was a vacation was awesome. And I really enjoyed seeing the different tropical and vacation areas on the island.
The setting is one of my favorite aspects of Mario Sunshine!
It's not as big of an adventure, but that's OK! It's kind of like Super Mario Bros. 2 in that regard. It's an odd duck, but ultimately it was doing something different.
I think if Mario Sunshine was made now, it might be even more impressive. In the game the areas are connected, geographically, but now, they'd have the ability to make the island actually seamless. If you could just go anywhere without loading.

They never revisited it in the platformers maybe, but both Isle Delfino and it's Pianta and Noki residents have appeared in a ton of the Mario spin-offs, including pretty much all the sports games, several of the go-karting games, a few of the RPGs and Smash Bros. Brawl. I hardly think they're deliberatley avoiding revisiting it for that reason XDSload Soap wrote:I personally disliked Sunshine's waterpark/holiday resort setting. It took a while for that to grow on people though. The Internet's initial reaction was seething hatred.darsparx wrote: Probably like how everyone loved the wind waker style over past 3d styles(even if I'm not a big fan of it myself unless it's in 2d pixel art form like minish cap)
I always thought it was nice, but I never liked OoT or the graphic-style it started so that's probably why. Wind Waker is the closest I've come to finishing a 3D Zelda but I always lose interest.

Has a Delfinan(?) or Noki ever been playable though? Or is Delfino Plaza just another backdrop for the latest Kart/Smash/Party spin-off? And in fairness, every Mushroom Kingdom character has turned up at some point or another in the spin-offs.
Nothing meaningful design wise from Sunshine carried over to later Mario installments in my opinion. I don't hate the game, I just think it was a bit of an evolutionary dead-end.
I'm super bias though as I generally don't like the Gamecube. I think the only core Nintendo franchise that actually improved in the transition from the N64 to the Gamecube was Smash Bros. Mario, Zelda, Wave Race and F-Zero were all worse IMO. Mario Kart and Starfox were much, much worse. And some never made it like Pilotwings. In its defence the GC got a fantastic Metroid game and Rogue Leader.
Now to wait for the comments about how SNES games got worse in the transition to N64.

I thought we could be friends, but it turns out you are a terrible person. My mum always told me there were bad people on the internet.I'm super bias though as I generally don't like the Gamecube. Don't get people here started on the N64, jeez. Now to wait for the comments about how SNES games got worse in the transition to N64.
