I always buy new given the choice, but I rarely pay full price. So take that for what you will. I like to buy a few titles at release simply to be a part of that initial buzz though.
Older. Not wiser.

What I want to say about gamesharing is that it is the same thing as buying used - not exactly the same thing - but the same thing. It isn't better or worse than buying used.oxymoron wrote:Say what you want about gamesharing but at least the dev get's chalk up one more sale. It's better than buying it used and them getting no sale.
Someone buying new then sells it off to recoup some costs and passes it to the next player -> 1 copy "bought new", total cost of the game is shared by 2 buyers, simply at different times.
Two people buying new together and share the game -> 1 copy "bought new", total cost of the game is shared by 2 buyers, simply at the outset. But even in this case the game can't be played simultaneously, so unless the sharers take turns, the game is also played sequentially by someone and then the next one and so on.
Apart from some details it is the same thing. Not that I mind, I am for game sharing and I am for buying and selling used games. The industry should get used to it and consider their pricing model with this in mind, just as it happens for other stuff like houses, furniture, consumer electronics, boats, cars, bicycles, books, cds, videos and such. Many of which have very active used markets that contribute to the health of the "new" sales - many people would not buying new at relatively high prices if they didn't know they could sell used down the road (literally down the road for cars I guess!).

It can actually be played at the same time. I've never done game sharing as in buying with other people but I've used my account to on my system to play games together with other people with my account on their system.Ivo wrote:the game can't be played simultaneously, so unless the sharers take turns, the game is also played sequentially by someone and then the next one and so on.

If we are talking about Steam then the game sharing functionality kicks you out after a few minutes when the official game owner logs in (maybe it is something else like GOG or Humble Bundle, which has no DRM).flex wood wrote:It can actually be played at the same time. Re: Do you feel bad about buying new(ish) releases used?
If a used game is $55 and a new copy is $60, I will buy the new copy. However, if there is a sale and I have coupons with it then I will go used. For example I bought DKC: Tropical Freeze shortly after release from GS. It was on sale for $44.99, then I got 10% off for being a rewards member, then I had enough points to buy a $25 off coupon, so after all was said and done I got the game for around $15. So, I felt good about buying used. But if I had to choose between $45 used and $50 new, I would have gone with the new copy.

Re: Do you feel bad about buying new(ish) releases used?
I feel no guilt about buying anything used if it fits my needs/budget and that includes games.
And really, why should games be different than any other entertainment media? I can buy books used, I can by CDs used, and I can buy DVDs used and no one cries foul.
What makes games any different? The fact that development studios complain about it loudly on the internet/game magazines?
It is not the consumer's fault that the budget for so-called "AAA" titles has gotten so out of control that the game has to sell a highly unlikely number of copies just to break even. It is not the consumer's job to bail major publishers/developers out when they make poor budgeting decisions.
Don't get me wrong - I don't WANT game developers to close down, even the ones that I don't particularly like. A healthy game industry is good for us all. But at the same time, I don't feel obligated to pay the freight on bad decisions either.

^Same. If it's $55 I'll buy new. Anything less I'll buy used. As for buying used in general even if it's a newer release, if I want it used then that's how I'm getting it. If the price is too high, I'll just buy it used for $30 a year later as opposed to $50 now.

Whoops! I was talking about psn not PC.Ivo wrote:If we are talking about Steam then the game sharing functionality kicks you out after a few minutes when the official game owner logs in (maybe it is something else like GOG or Humble Bundle, which has no DRM).flex wood wrote:It can actually be played at the same time. I thought with the family share thing on steam you could play any game on whoever you are sharing with and you would only get kicked if that person started to play that game you were playing.
Re: Do you feel bad about buying new(ish) releases used?
I was talking about PS in my post. In Playstation gameshares you essentially get 4 copies of the game for the price of one.
