It's been a while since I posted in this thread, so I've got a few movies to add. Spoilers in the first two.

Barry Lyndon

I watched this not because the premise of the movie spoke to me, but because of who directed it. It's kind of a depressing movie, since it's about a guy who lifts himself out of poverty and into the upper class, then, through his own stupidity, sends himself right back in worse shape than before. The portrayal of British society in the 1700s is almost aggravating in how fake and pompous it was (in real life, I don't mean that the movie feels fake).
Brazil (director's cut)
Image
I love "weird" movies, and Brazil didn't disappoint. It takes place in a dystopian future, a very strange and inefficient dystopian future. You know those scenes in TV shows where two characters are trying to find each other and keep missing each other by seconds, or when you try to run up the infinite stairs in SM64? That's basically the whole movie. Everything is so ridiculously tied up in mounds of pointless paperwork and overly complicated machines that don't work.

I haven't seen the original ending, but I love the way the director's cut ends and from what I've heard of the original, I think I'll leave it unseen. The way it seems that Sam has made an incredibly lucky escape at the last minute only to reveal that everything after he arrived in the torture chamber was a dream and that he's been broken mentally was a twist I didn't see coming. It's a downer ending but not every movie needs to end on a bright note or a sequel-inducing cliffhanger, especially when the movie's trying to make a statement about something.
Paths of Glory
Image
Yet another depressing movie, also directed by Kubrick (I believe this was his first major film). The self-serving behavior of the officers at the expense of their men is disgusting, yet unfortunately matches up with reality. That sort of thing really does happen, though thankfully not on the scale shown in the movie these days. I enjoyed Paths of Glory far more than I expected to considering the age of it. Most war films back then were upbeat, and featured little beyond Hollywood's studs of the time easily killing tons of bad guys.
Starship Troopers
Image
Finally something fun. I don't know how I managed to go so long without seeing this movie but I wish I hadn't. It's got a feel very similar to Galaxy Quest; not suprising considering they were made about the same time and are both genre parodies. This one mocks the same hokey war movies I was talking about previously, and does a great job of it. The book was quite different (for one, it was dead serious) but both are great in their own way. Best line: "The enemy can not push a button... if you disable his hand."

The Man from Nowhere

Watched this on netflix the other day and loved it. Overall it's an awesome Korean action flick. Alot of people compared it to Taken but aside from the kidnapping element it's pretty different definitely has a lot more violence and action in my opinion.

Also rented Non-stop and That Awkward Moment last night.

Non-stop was a pretty good action flick and managed to keep me guessing the whole time. As far as plan hijacking movies go it's pretty top notch.

That Awkward Moment was also surprisingly good although it was really lathered on the pervy jokes and sexual humor. Definitely a movie for a mature audience audience with immature tastes  .

Man From Nowhere is a good one. I had Hobie watch it with me a few months ago. Pleasant surprises are always memorable.

Yeah, I had ignored the The Man from Nowhere on Netflix for the longest time. For some reason I got it in my head that it was a bad movie and that I should avoid watching it. Then something compelled me to watch it one day and I was surprised by how good it was. Then I looked around online and saw how much of a positive reception the movie got and wondered how it ever slipped under my radar.

Anyway, it's now one of my personal favorites. Definitely a movie I'd consider if I was making like a top 50 list of my favorite movies. I really love the soundtrack and it's a surprisingly emotional movie even though all most people will take away from it is the action.

So anyway, I recently re-watched this:

It's still as awesome as I remember it being. Just a fantastic, balls to the wall zombie action movie that is really intense. So much better than World War Z (although I didn't dislike that movie). I can see how some people can be disappointed that it has a very different approach than 28 Days Later. They're like two different movies, but taken for what it is 28 Weeks Later is a lot of fun. I hope to see a 28 Months Later, followed by an eventual 28 YEARS Later.

God, I never get tired of hearing this:

It's one of my favorite movie themes. It's so foreboding and just seems to keep building and building until that moment when you know the shit hits the fan and the song hits it's climax. Some songs are just perfect for the zombie apocalypse and here's another one:

Last week I saw Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

I really liked it. But these new ape flicks still have problems. However ... it's such a massive improvement over Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It makes that movie look like the joke that it is.

This movie also did something for me, that I was hoping the last one would do, but didn't ... I'm now looking forward to seeing how they
fill the gap between Dawn and the first Planet of the Apes. I could definitely see some new takes on the Ape enslavement and possibly an Ape government that completely re-writes the history as told. The 20 years, or so, for Apes to develop intelligence never made sense. Neither did the excuse that pets died out so they used Apes instead.
For the first time in a long time, it's a prequel that actually makes me interested in how it will connect up to the existing films ... and I'm optimistic about it, even.

Favorite thing about The Man From Nowhere was the lead actor he did a great job. Kind of wish they had left his back story a mystery though. It's not that his back story was bad it I just liked the mystery and not knowing kind of added to his bad ass factor.

Next movies I'm checking out on netflix are Outrage and Beyond Outrage. Takeshi Kitano is probably one of my favorite Japanese actors/directors.

I keep hearing good things from respectable sources about the film. I am not going to lie, the trailer makes it look unbelievably stupid, cheesy and full of action schlock so it was really discouraging me. I may go and see it!
