From my experience, at this point in time, DS game codes don't even count anymore. A lot of times you'll register one and it'll be like "thanks ... but that isn't worth any coins". I'm surprised people are still getting coins for Wii games. I'm sure SOME DS games still work, though.

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney came out prior to Club Nintendo starting.

Initially it was only Nintendo published titles that worked on Club Nintendo. It's only been over the last three years or so, that other titles have worked as well.

Now, I'm not sure what the hell the standard is. But it appears to be some 3rd party stuff, and Nintendo published stuff.

I could probably determine what the rules were if I bought multi-platform junk on Nintendo systems, but, in general, I don't.

However, something I have noticed, non-Nintendo games that have codes will be advertised on Club Nintendo.

At first I thought just Nintendo made games came with them, then it seemed like everything came with a code. Anyone know the standard here? Just curious. I paid too much for Phoenix Wright figuring I'd buy new for once and I'd get a code.
PW is developed by Capcom, not Nintendo, so there wouldn't be a code. Only games developed by Nintendo have them.

If anyone is confused about what games are eligible for points and for what system, Nintendo does have convenient lists already written out for you.

I've finally have sat down and started playing a game I purchased awhile ago, PushMo. Quite a fun little puzzler!

Pushmo's the best, man. I really need to grab Crashmo and Pushmo World.

That's not true anymore. For the last few years Nintendo has been expanding what games will get coins.

Thank you, sir. I totally forgot about this list. It's very useful.

On the DS? None of my +80 DS games aside from Nintendo-developed titles have them. 3DS might be a different story.

Sorry, you didn't specify DS, so I thought you were talking inclusive of all accepted games.

Yes, on DS and Wii, only games published by Nintendo in North America have them.
On 3DS and Wii U, that's not the case.

If I bought Shin Megami Tensei IV would I have any clue what was going on in the story if this was my first foray into the series?

The only mainline SMT games that are linked are SMT 1 & 2 (SFC), and even then you can play the second without needing to have played the first. The side games are pretty much all stand alone, maybe with some small continuity nods. The main outliers are the two halves of Persona 2 and with the two Digital Devil Saga games, both of which are direct story sequels.
