OutRun is very cathartic and relaxing. Part of it's the scenery, part of it is the engaging but non-stressful gameplay and part of it is the cool tunes.

Between OutRun and Daytona USA, Yu Suzuki really nailed down whatever it is that makes driving games fun.

See, I think that OutRun is the most pure driving game ever. It's not about beating other cars to the finish line. It's not about tuning your vehicle or filling up your garage. It's about going from Point A to Point B in style and with speed, sick tunes pumping through the stereo, and gorgeous scenery flying by.

I do think the sequels really lost something when they started adding rivals and such. It just kind of missed the point.

I recently played through Outrun 2019 and despite it being a much darker game, literally and figuratively, it retained that core Out Run appeal.

I recently played through Outrun 2019 and despite it being a much darker game, literally and figuratively, it retained that core Out Run appeal.

It's not quite as good as the original for various reasons but I personally feel that one is a very underrated game with a great sense of speed.
