Frown: Sick of my job. Having a hard time finding a better one, but that's largely my own fault. I should be trying harder.

Also, I'm with you, jp1. I have had rotten people like that in my life too; they never go away as long as you keep giving them what they want.

Well I went on job interview 2 weeks ago and got my official offer today. Money amount isnt amazing, only 5% increase, but would be a shorter commute. I could possibly have more advancement opportunities. Benefits are near the same

Pros of leaving
-Half the commute and no toll roads
-Slightly more money
-Possible advancement opportunities
-Project load overall at current company is a bit lean even though I am on a steady project
-I can possibly have to move to other offices which are 40-50 mile commutes from house at current job

Cons
-I like my current employer for the most part and they have compensated me well
-Current job is laid back. Flexible work hours
-I can dress more casually at current job
-current work schedule is 4 10 hour days a week. Making up days off on Friday is easy. New place works 9-80s
-my next raise at end of year will probably be higher than the offer at new company

Such a tough decision, I really dont know what I will do...

I make a pro and con list for jobs once a year, lol. I will probably retire where I am at though.

Pros of my current job:
Short commute.
Lots of time off.
I am the boss of my department.
Very laid back for me.
Got a little seniority.

Cons of my current job:
I deserve more money.

Pros of a new job.
$500 more a month.

Cons of a new job.
I would have to work 500 more hours a year.
My commute would be 260 hours longer in a year.
I would no longer be the boss.

So I say every-time that would be happier staying where I am at.

- After careful planning, consideration, and contemplation, I gently approached the topic with my wife. She agreed we need to be forcing her sister in the right direction if she is to expect any help from us.

I spent the next day finding a suitable woman's shelter/rehab type place full of great programs that she could benefit from, dragged her all over the place spending hours of my day and half a tank of gas....then she had a "friend" come pick her up and declined to stay there because of the rules. DAMN IT! She even met with them and gave her word she wanted to get her crap together...I got made a damned fool once again. My wife is (sort of) on board with setting some guidelines now though, so that is good.

For the most part I'm an understanding guy. I've made my share of mistakes, so I try to judge as little as possible. Honestly, how can someone have so little regard for other folks? I'm raging at this point. Trying to be cool about it still, so I don't come across like I don't care how bad it hurts my wife.

Samson, I know what you mean...other's have given the exact same advice. I really appreciate it. Believe me, were it just me I would have dropped her years ago. I'm working on it though. By the way I just noticed your location. I love it up there in the mountains. I grew up in Morgantown for a large portion of my childhood, familiar with it? WV is underrated. It's still my favorite place. The other half before I moved here to hell on earth AKA Florida was spent in New Orleans. Funny it was splitting time between Creole and Hillbilly.

@John - how long have you been at your current job? Does your degree offer quick employment opportunities if it doesn't pan out and you can't go back to the current one?

For me - it sounds like you mostly like your current job, they've been fair to you, they compensate you well, and it's low stress. Even if the job was significantly more money I don't think it outweighs those pros - those pros are extremely hard to find and you're giving up a lot of guarantees for a whole bunch of "probably's" and "I think/hope so's".

Thanks for your input Mike, I have been here a little over 5 years. Yeah, I could probably find a job in Houston considering the current market with my experience fairly easily.

The big things going for the next prospective company is the shortened commute and with no possibility of being relocated to a further office. Last year I spent 9 months driving 48 miles each way. The other thing I was looking at is career advancement. I felt like I could possibly have a quicker path to management if I switched, but I would also be starting from scratch.

The money thing wasnt much of an issue. This was going to be a $6200 a year raise by switching and my last 2 raises here (past 2 Decembers so only 5-6 months away) have been 8300 or $4 an hour. Though the shorted commute and tolls wouldve been a decrease in expense.

Thinking all this through, I guess I dont have much reason to leave as I thought I did.I guess part of it is the natural human tendency to not stay content and strive for more, but sometimes gotta learn a little more patience.

I also spoke to a few older colleagues (one of them being my lead, but not my boss or management) and he suggested that I should have a home here unless I just dislike it. And that he thinks I should stay.

My wife was recently in a similar situation. Someone was trying to hire her, pretty aggressively actually. Tried to throw a lot more money her way, but she refused to give up the 4 10's. I don't blame her, especially now that we have a babby.
