At least the combat is better? Or at least it's easier to hit things than in Ys I.

Ys II is just maze after maze, after maze, after maazeee... I'm horrible with mazes if I can't map them
I was able to map the first one, since it was just rooms and stairs, but the rest? Noooope. Especially in the Solomon Shrine.
I'll get through it eventually (with a guide) but gahhh.

Alright, I'm switching out Punch Out with Metroid. Started messing about with that tonight, game is too sick.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
Started up Otogi 2 and got just over two hours in. Kicked a spider boss' ass (twice) and killed a demented headless samurai. It's a pretty unique game so far. It's sort of a dynasty warriors type thing, but with smaller levels and lots and lots of anime style air walking. It's absolutely amazing looking, truly a demonstration of the Xbox's considerable horsepower.

Just to reiterate, this is an original xbox game and not an especially late one.
There is a story but, like the music and characters, it's kind of distant and ethereal. Not that it matters too much. You can see in Otogi From Software planting little seeds that were cultivated into important facets of Dark Souls' experience: focus on atmosphere over story, distinct monster designs, punishing boss battles, simple but deep combat set-up. It also has a few of the negatives Dark Souls has with it's slowdown, flaky lock-on and occasionally dodgy camera. Ah well.
Maybe I'll actually finish this one.

Yeah combat is better but the navigation is much, much harder. I've played Ys II many times and I still use maps.laurenhiya21 wrote:Ys II is just maze after maze, after maze, after maazeee... 1. Strider (Arcade/PS2)
2. Thief Gold (PC)
3. Ys II (PC)
4. System Shock 2 (PC)
5. The Typing of the Dead (DC)
6. Marvel vs. Capcom (DC)
7. Bushido Blade (PS1)
8. Wario Land (Virtual Boy)
9. Spyro the Dragon (PS1)
10. Eye of the Beholder (Sega CD)
Thief Gold is done, System Shock 2 is started. Thief was amazing, and SS2 seems pretty cool so far.
Only now do I understand how tragic the closing of Looking Glass studios truly was/is.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
Played more MGS2 whilst the site has been down. Spoilers ahead, as usual.
I used a uniform to sneak into the shell 1 core and find the hostages, as well as a directional microphone. Managed to find Ames with the sound of his pacemaker. He then died of a suspicious heart attack (FOXDIE?). He told me the president was on shell 2, so I found a sniper rifle, shot out a ton of bombs from the shell 1-2 bridge (this part was a massive pain in the ass. The twitchiness of the sniper rifle when shooting a bomb control device on a move sentry drone was making me scream with irritation. Worst part so far imo) and then fought a boss fight with a Harrier jet.
Still quite enjoying the game, it's a lot of fun. MGS continues to be a series I really didn't expect to like, but which I actually kinda do.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
I crushed the vile Xenon Empire under the tread of my tanks and the heel of my boot, and after three years on my summer gaming challenge list, the might Military Madness has fallen.prfsnl_gmr wrote: Here is my list for summer 2014:
1. Dragon's Lair
2. ????
3. Flashback
4. Halo 2
5. Jumping Flash! 2
6. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
7. Military Madness
8. R-Type Delta
9. ????
10. Virtual Boy Wario Land
I ended up really, really enjoying this game. It is wonderfully designed, fiendishly difficult, incredibly addictive, and very fun. I very much preferred the original TG16 maps to the maps in its sequel/remake. (To unlock the original TG16 version of Military Madness, I had to play through the main campaign in Nectaris: Military Madness (PS1)). In the sequel/remake, the computer starts out with vastly superior firepower, and each battle turns into a war of attrition. (The computer takes some of your units, but you can take slightly more units if you implement your strategy well.) In the original, however, each side starts out with roughly an equal amount of units, but there is a mad scramble for resources throughout each battle. (In most maps, there are numerous "neutral" bases full of powerful units you can deploy if you capture them before the computer.) Moreover, the maps in the original are designed so that capturing your enemies headquarters is often a viable strategy for victory. (I one only one of the sixteen maps in the sequel/remake by capturing the computer's headquarters, but I won roughly half of the sixteen maps in the original campaign in this this way.) Finally, the difficulty curve in the original version is much smoother, which makes for a much more enjoyable experience.
In sum, I am very happy that I finally played through Military Madness, and I highly recommend the original, TG16 version of the game to anyone who thinks he or she might enjoy a challenging, hex-mapped, turn-based, military strategy game.
(I also highly recommend the PS1 sequel/remake to anyone looking for an excellent gaming value. Although I spent almost 27 hours with the game, I have not touced the game's two "advanced" campaigns, its 44-map "mini" campaign, or its cooperative campaign. Based on my time with the game, I suspect that I could spend another 27-30 hours "completing" the game without touching the competitive modes or the map editing features.)
.....
With regard to the rest of my challenge, I am afraid that my time with Military Madness has satisfied my tast for turn-based strategy for some time. Accordingly, I have dropped Final Fantasy Tactics from my list. Likewise, I have dropped Uncharted 2 from my list because: (1) I will probably play it anyway, and (2) it probably is not old enought to be considered a classic. Accordingly, I am looking for two new titles to add to my list, and I am considering:
Blaster Master (NES)
Landstalker (GEN)
Return Fire (3DO/PS1)
Road Rash (3DO/PS1)
Samurai Shodown/Samurai Shodown II (NEO)
Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (SNES)
Which of these games do you think I should add to my list? (Also, which game do you think I should play next?)
Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
I think Ys III is happening in Together RPG right now, if that influences your choice.

Any of these would be fine.prfsnl_gmr wrote: Blaster Master (NES)
