Just bought a brand new 1st generation wii. Want to mod-
Good afternoon everyone. I tried to go to wii brew and can't for the life of me figure out how to answer the security verification code to register. I just bought a brand new wii for the sole purpose of modding but I bought the first generation wii so it will play GameCube games. It is the one that is released with regular wii sports and is white. Is it desirable not to update the wii and do the mod or should I update to 4.3 and them mod it. I have super smash bros. so I know about smash stack is this the best method of doing it? Any advice would be great!

I haven't ever soft-modded a Wii before, but from what I've read, the easiest and safest way to do it is to just update to the latest version then use the Letter Bomb method.

You should wait for others to yay or nay first, tho. Like I said, I've never tried the soft mod, just read about it.

Letterbomb is a quick and dirty mod but it'll get you to where you need to go (homebrew channel) if you're just looking to throw some emu's and roms on an sd card.
If you're looking to get the most from your softmod (region free, usb loader, run backups, etc.) then I suggest using the ModMii installer.

Just follow the instructions closely and you'll be fine.

Yeah, ModMii will set up literally everything for you.
To answer your initial question, yes you should update to the latest/final system menu, there is absolutely no reason not to anymore (no loss of the ability for softmodding like there would be with a PS3). But ModMii will take care of that for you too.
Use ModMii. No fail.

Thirding ModMii. I did it a dozen times a couple years ago, no question the best way to do it in my eyes.

As someone who has modded every single Wii owned by everyone I know (So, 12-15 or so), I have to ask why ModMii is superior to Letterbomb?
Letterbomb certainly gives you region free, and lets you load backups in whatever way you like, with no additional modding needed. Going by MauiFrog's guide, you end up with pretty much everything you could need and then some.
Its literally "drop some files, open mail, drop some files, install wad, drop some files, done"
If ModMii is really that much better I'm quite curious as to how!! Maybe I will have to switch methods for future modding.

ModMii is a Windows-based program to set everything up for you. It puts Letterbomb on the SD card. It puts USB Loaders, and PriiLoader, and all the other stuff you want and configures it all into the proper folders. It gives you a custom generated HTML page telling you exactly what to do in exactly what order so you can't screw anything up (presuming you can read and follow directions)
Basically, it just makes it easier and far less likely to make a mistake for the first timer. But at its heart, it's just a wrapper for Letterbomb and other mods.
