but it would be simple for the mods to just delete the links in the posts instead of just nuking it.

Not as simple as deleting all posts made by the spammer when nuking their account. I wish people would just report the shit and not reply to it. Deleting the whole thread is simple too, but letting people make fools of themselves for having replied to something that's no longer there is easier. Housekeeping is mostly a thankless job. :P
