For anyone who buys it at FYE, they have a 10% off any purchase deal going that you get if you sign up for their $11/month club card ( ). There is no charge for the first 30 days (so no extra $$ at the register) and you can cancel it online anytime (like when you get home, I suppose). So that saved me about $15 on the Retron 5, all for no commitment/credit check/etc. on my part. I simply have to go to their website and cancel my auto-renew (and first charge) before the month is out :)

Just discovered that Road Rash for Game Boy won't completely work with the Retron 5. It's apparently one of those handful of games that won't work properly with the GBA and the Retron 5 is trying to emulate it as if it were a GBA.

It crashes whenever you try to start a race just like it does on GBA.

Well, I just gave it some time with Crisis Force (FC) and Contra (NES) and WOW!

I am a believer

This little device may do wonders for my cart-based backlog. I am amazed by how great the picture looks and how amazing the games sound. I tried a few filters but, really, not sure why you wouldn't just want to use the default. I am not going to throw everything I have at it to see what it can handle, but I may try an SMS game later with the attachment for fun. Very, very impressed.

I don't like the controller, the firmware upgrade is a bit of a convoluted process, and the cart fits are tight...but these are really VERY minor niggles. Great system, and for someone like me who has stayed away from emulation/hooking up a PC to the the big screen for a long time, the ability to play my own carts (even via a dumped ROM) is very cool.

I'm not sure if I should bring up Road Rash or not considering it may do more damage than any good. If the setup they've created for the GBA is that damn accurate that it tanks on the handful of bad games the real GBA will choke with too I consider that a good thing.

If anyone wants to get some cheap games for their famicom or nes slot on the R5 I've got some new stuff I'll be letting go of (Choplifter, Family Jockey, Final Lap, and 3 camerica games - micro machines, fire hawk and mig29.)

Awesome! I'm tempted to check out FYE, but I think I'll just hold off until Amazon finally fulfills my order. I'll save the $25-$50 and just be patient.

Here's an Ouya vs R5 vid:

Wish he had done a better side-by-side audio comparison.

lol. Was just curious. You've gotten an Xbox One, Wii U, gaming PC and Retron 5 in the span of 7 months? That would drive me nuts deciding what to even play haha.

Welcome to the darkside LOL. Truth be told, I was skittish on this when I thought about buying it. I passed it up a bunch of time in a two week or so period. Once I had it though, everything changed. You really have to own one to understand.

Considering there has been very little of interest already out or regularly coming out for either the Xbox One or the Wii U, my decisions haven't been that hard. I don't think I've plugged my Xbox One back into its HDMI slot for two three months or so.

Huh. Now I'm gonna have to check the FYE's near me to see if they have one.

Wolem well said. For all the random tight starfished collectors out there whining about it, the system must be used a bit to be really believed. I was flinchy when I found a single unit here locally at the start of last month but I just had to snap it up after playing with the menu with the SMB+DH cart plugged into it as I saw the promise in it. I am also because of owning once a NGPC used to the click stick so that didn't bother me either on the controller.
