I want to get a handheld computer of some sort (like smartphone sized) that can play WAV files, then after playing one file, stop. Unless I hit the “next” button, then I want it to play the next item on my playlist.
I want to do this because I study foreign languages and I want on-the-go audio flashcards. Basically I listen to the news in Japanese, capture the words I can't understand using Audacity, then name the little sound files whatever the word is (構成, 日本企業, 過激派武装勢力, etc.)
If I were to dump all the Japanese vocabulary wav files on an ipod or something, I'd just get machine gunned with a bunch of syllables I can't yet understand very well. I'm kinda competent with reading, my listening is just way behind.
I need something pocket sized device that can play a file, stop so I can have some time to think about what I just heard, then let me decide if I want to peek at the screen and read the kanji or click the “next” button so I can hear the next word. It's kinda hard to look up something like this on google, cause it's so weirdly specific and most MP3 players are designed to just play a music in a continuous playlist.
Does anyone know of a mp3 player or similar device that has a setting to facilitate what I'm talking about here? Thanks...
Need an MP3 player that can play a song once, then stop

While I don't know of a device off the top of my head, I do have an idea that comes to mind...
If you're creating wavs in audacity, then why not just create silence for a length of time after the word is spoken. For example, let's say you feel one minute is a good length of time, you have the word spoken then have 1 minute of silence left on the track. That would be enough time for you to think, then look at the screen if you wish. And you'll still be able to hit next to skip to the next one. I suppose you could also make them longer than a minute, but the longer you make them the larger the files will be. You could convert them to mp3 since quality shouldn't even be a concern, and mp3 takes up a lot less space than wavs. It shouldn't even be a pain in the ass to do, since you'll already be in an audio editor creating the tracks in the first place.

My first thought was Rockbox but I don't think it has that function. It would be trivial for a developer to add support. I'd suggest asking on the forum. There's a lot of great MP3 players that support the firmware upgrade. I own a few compatible devices and I love creating skins that function how I want and being able to change the sound through it's extensive filter/eq setup. It's format plugins are also awesome - you can play Midis with different sound sets and various videogame formats.
Also Doom.

Yeah, Roxbox is pretty nice. I have it on my SanDisk Sansa E250 (old model). I like how Sandisk said officially that they can't add SDHC support for the E250 v1 in a firmware update, but some how the Roxbox custom firmware has SDHC support.
