Ready Player One- has anyone read this?!

Well its just that it was too heavy handed. It was literally too much.

Clearly I'm not the only one that felt this way. He just dropped a minimum of 3 80s/90s references in every sentence. It was just like 'enough dude... we get it. you like the 80s.'

I searched for a post I did on KLOV about it. This is what it felt like to read:

"I woke up and pulled back my PAC MAN bed sheets. I stared at my carpet which was covered in SPIDER-MAN pictures, and decided I'd get some coffee in my STREET FIGHTER COFFEE MUG. After that, it was time to play some ATARI games. Classics of course... DONKEY KONG and SUPER MARIO on my SUPERNES. After that I decided to surf the net on my modded APPLE IIe and I used my regular password to log in, which was "WHATISTHEMATRIX123?" while I watched THE GOONIES on my BETAMAX PLAYER. I ended up going to school, (PERFECT STRANGERS HIGH, of course) and I decided to wear my WHERES THE BEEF t-shirt. And I hung out with my friends. We call ourselves THE GHOSTBUSTERS. We all listened to BANANARAMA on our SONY WALKMAN players..."


I know I'm embellishing a little, sure. But that's it... a little.

I understand the complaints about Cline's writing, but it's still a great book in spite of it's faults. It's a literary nerdgasm.

I think what I actually liked about the book the most ... is it reads like an 80s movie. It gives off a serious Last Starfighter or Flight of the Navigator vibe at times.

Isn't his password for OASIS from Last Starfighter, or was I wrong on that one?

Leucosia is that girl's name he never got or got over. The only connotation I can figure is, it's also the name for the Sirens in Greek. She was his Siren. So it makes sense. I don't think there's any Last Starfighter connection there.

So to end the summer (classes start Monday) I decided to finally read this and have burned through the first third of it so far this morning. It's much better than I thought it would be, and I am digging it.

The first time I heard about this book, it was a side effect of reading this article:

Apparently the book served as a catalyst for this guy's... indulgence:

"The book just blew me away," he remembers. "It awakened something in me and I started thinking that I can't believe I'm not surrounded by all these things that I grew up loving."

Long story short he turned his apartment into an 80's fantasy arcade and his fiance left him over it.

"Now that my fiancée and I are no longer together, it's hard to enjoy the room as much as I want to," he says. "I always end up thinking about her."
