Give it a try dude - it isn't nearly as convoluted as Silvergun. Just try to get the prologue down first - that part is "easy", but it will ingrain the idea (at least it has me) then slowly you'll start taking down more and more chunks.

For the prologue, they are popcorn (or shrimp) enemies, so one shot with white or black is all it takes, BUT, i'd suggest alternating anyways, just to get in the habit, since you'll need to do it later on for larger enemies.

Prologue:
position far left, upper middle: 6 white
position center, upper middle: 6 black
position far left, upper middle: 6 white
position center, upper middle: 6 black
stop firing, position mid-left, let the 36 shrimp clear, once all the black cut across the white, take out the 18 white, then the 18 black
if you've done it fast enough, take out the 3 white, then the 3 black

You'll have a 22 chain and 390K - do this a few times, it become second nature and cements the scoring mechanic.
I'm quoting this so I can find it later.

Nice progress, Mike. It'll all come together at some point...just in time for another wall to conquer (stage 3). Heh. :)

This guy's replay shows the "easy" method to chaining that circling planes portion of chapter 2 prologue. It's the XBLA version, but the technique's the same.

This gets 38 total chains. Not all, but a little easier than the "44-chain method"...

Btw, that vid does eventually show one example of how the XBLA version is f'ed up. At the boss fight, the player is able to do damage to the eye as the boss first appears...before the actual fight starts.

My update: A lot is coming back now...Still too many chain breaks though...and no chapter 5. :(

Impressive, Chris. Very, very, impressive.

I'm up to 2.8mil now and to the stage 3 midboss.

I don't chain the prologue of stage 2 at all, but I do chain the first section of level 2 quite well now, usually hit the mid section around 20 chain. Taking the boss down at about 65 seconds left - he's getting quite easy. My problem initially would be backing out while firing - i'd inadvertently open the other eye on the way out, which would hit me of course - couldn't understand it at first, now I don't do that anymore 8)

Dude, that is a nice score Chris! What do you think it would take to reach 20m with your current route?

Thanks! 8) Just need to reach chapter 5 bosses to hit 20+ mil at this rate.
I played this pretty hardcore circa 2003-05...like a western Ikaruga cult back then.
So it's only a matter of remembering some of my old techniques today.

My best ever score was about 28.5 million. Had plenty of potential to reach 30m, but never had that run where everything went right. So many times, I'd have near 20mil starting ch4 only to fall apart somewhere. I did however have a PROTOTYPE mode score of over 32m, which actually did go pretty well. But the nature of proto mode makes boss fights broken, so that doesn't really count...just a nice little consolation. Anyway, not sure I can come very close to 30m today...We'll see. :)

Feeling these chains!

All I had to do was watch the in-game demo to extend my Stage 1 chain even further. I'm not concerned with chaining on Chapter 2 for now. Just have to figure out how to navigate the changing color bullets after the white/black/red square now.
