Got a Sega Pico!

Post by sega dude »

Today I got a Sega Pico with 7 games (2 of which have manuals) for $4.99 at a Goodwill. It also has the ac adaptor and AV cable (which is broken, but it's generic so no big deal). But unfortunately, I can't get it to work. I connected to an older CRT TV with another AV cable that works fine with my NES, but I only get a black screen with all 7 games. The screen flashes after I flick the power switch, but nothing happens, I only get a black screen. I haven't tried cleaning the games yet, maybe that will help. I would also like the manual for the console itself, but I've yet to find it online. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

that's a good price for one!

I also got one for $5.00 last year, but only with one game.

Mine turns on okay. You flip the switch, and they should start automatically.

Did you check the plug?

It uses the same yellow tipped genesis plug. Do you have an extra one? If you do, swap them to see if the plug doesnt work. Its possible that the plug doesnt send enough juice to the system?

good luck.

Had it working for a little while yesterday with the adapter it came with. Cleaned the games and had most (but not all) of them working, even though I got virtually nothing off of them. Then it froze and now none of the games work again, including the ones that were working. Gonna try cleaning the cartridge contacts on the console itself next.

EDIT: Looks like all it needed was a good clean. Cleaned the contacts in the console itself with an old toothbrush and rubbing alcohol and all the games with perfectly now.

Crayola: Create a World, Math Antics with 101 Dalmations, Mickey's Blast Into the Past, Muppets on the Go, Richard Scarry's Huckle and Lowly's Busiest Day Ever, Sesame Street Alphabet Avenue (with manual) and A Year at Pooh Corner (with manual). Also got the manual for Lion King Adventures at Pride Rock but the game was not in the box.

Nice! The $5 price alone is a steal, and Muppets on the Go and Sesame Street tend to sell for a bit more than the others. If Sonic or Tails were in there, you would have struck gold.

I'm still kicking myself for not picking up the last one I saw :P. Guy had it and about 7-8 boxed games stuffed in some grocery bags on his table at the fleas. I looked it over thought it was an electronic read along game. Didn't notice any A/V cables :P. Almost picked it up but then thought how would this really fit in with my collection. So I walked off :P. Pretty sure it had Sonic and maybe even tails along with crayola and a few other random games.

Could have probably gotten it all for $5-$10 :X.

Yeah, Pico is one of those consoles (well... computers that think they're a toy) that are all over the map in terms of price. Some see it as a old kids toy not unlike an old Fisher Price scooter, while video game fans either proclaim it to be one of the bad SEGA consoles (which it is not, in fact no SEGA console is bad  ) or they see the value in it as a collectable and even get a bit of fun out of the software.

It's a real steal at yard sales, and on ebay you can get lucky though often people overprice them thinking they're some super rare piece of hardware. I'd say $20-25 with a few games is a fair price and anything less is a bargain.

Though its important to be aware that Majesco made a later model [seen here] that looks different, and while it's 1:1 in function and a/v output, I think being stripped of a few cool bits of visual flare make it a lesser version of the US Pico.

I had a Pico w/Sonic and Richard Scarry for a while, but the Pico's pen didn't work, so I got a new Pico plus 7 games off ebay earlier this year for $20+shipping. Since then I've picked up most of the US library with only 6 games remaining.
