Re: PC build thread
I never did share a picture of my PC with the new MSi motherboard. While the shroud is different the PCB of the graphics card is the same colour. Looks really nice in person.
It's a 990FXA-GD65. Super happy with it. A whole hell of a lot nicer than that Gigabyte board I was using. Hopefully more durable too, I don't want to be replacing my motherboard twice a year.
About 20 days after I sold my 7950 I was messaged with a very convincing argument stating it didn't work. When I got it back it worked just fine and still does.
Now I just need matching brown or black SATA cables.
Nevermind that my case has no window.
I'm trying to see whether or not I can visit one of my friend's at a local tech university once in a while to use their 800mb down/up connection.

Ryan, your cable management is superb. I keep meaning to take my rig apart and clean up the wires, but that's a bigger project than I've found time for, and I monitor my heat and am doing just fine. But still. Damn. Don't see setups that tidy too often!

Thank you. Luckily this case is nice and sturdy so you can't see a bulge in the back of the case where all the cables are stuffed.noiseredux wrote:Ryan, your cable management is superb. Twist ties and evenly spacing the cables along the back of the motherboard plate was all it took. Also laying the case down and using both arms when putting on the panel to make sure the clips would, ya know, clip.
The nice thing is, unless I go and upgrade my power supply or case for whatever reason, it's done and I can easily swap new stuff in without much trouble. I love the case to death too so I don't think I'll be messing with it for a while. The only reason I would swap out my power supply is because of how noisy it gets. Probably the noisiest part in my system now.

I think I would buy the white one in the future. This black one gets tons of micro-scratches if you look at it funny.

Re: PC build thread
So, I ordered that Xeon CPU I mentioned earlier. I happened across a great deal for $78. Hopefully it will be here by the end of the week.
Reading a little about these CPUs on Overclock.net I saw a bunch of folks that are getting stable overclocks at 4.6Ghz on these. I'm going to shoot for 4.0Ghz and leave it at that.

Re: PC build thread
I was thinking of starting a thread to show off our builds, but if you all would rather keep it condensed into this thread I'm cool with that too. Once I get my new CPU installed I will post my PC in here as well.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:I never did share a picture of my PC with the new MSi motherboard. Re: PC build thread
So despite building my own PCs for 15-20 years now, I have never overclocked anything and am not sure if there's a lot to it these days, if I would want to do it, if it would necessitate lots of extra cooling, etc.
I do know that my processor and MB allow for overclocking, and I know that some video cards get overclocked too. I know the rig I put together is fast but, given the components, is overclocking something I can do? Should do? Would want to do (or avoid) for some reason? It arrives in a few hours and I am going to assemble it then, so if there's stuff I need to do at the level of hardware this would be the time….
