Well then in that case we're simply working from different definitions of maturity.

I think John is going by the ESRB's stance on what counts as a Mature (M-rated) game

Well in the context of blood, gore, sex, language and the game rating. Speaking about the story or tone, 'mature' may not apply even with a 'mature' rating. I think some are mixing these together when discussing this topic.

Well not specifically ESRB. Just that a game is only suitable for mature or older audiences if it has this content. So kids shouldnt play those. It really bears no indication on the depth of the plot or characters.

I think you need to ask yourself what makes a game "kiddie" to you. Then tell people that's why you don't like a certain game instead. I would never say I don't like a game 'cause it's "adult" or "mature" instead I would say things like too violent, sexist, grainy, realistic, gory, vulgar and many more. People should do the same for "kiddie" 'cause it seems most actually mean some of these: simplistic, non-complex, colorful, friendly, non-violent, accessible, less competitive, ect, ect......

I wouldnt say 'I' have to ask myself anything. I am pretty open minded about trying games out and taking them for what they are. I also know what I generally like. This is just a discussion on perceptions.

The term kiddie can mean several of those things all at once and is just a very general term for something that is meant for kids. McDonald's Happy Meal toys can be an example of something accurately described as 'kiddie'. Doesnt mean adults cant or dont enjoy them.

Just to clear things up, if you have a 6 year old, would you buy him a 360 or a Wii U?

If you enjoy "family/kiddie" games that is ok. I personally enjoy kids cartoons. Even though the Wii has adult (18+) games like Madworld and Manhunt , if you take the general perspective you will see the majority of games have PG or lower rating.

I think the best argument against Wii being "kiddie" is to compare Mii's and PS Home. You know that when Nintendo made "Miis" they were targeting children as a huge sector of their consumers.

If the Nintendo formula works for adults, why wouldn't Sony and Microsoft turn their flagship games more into platformers like Mario and kart racers like Mario Kart? Why do they concentrate on games like GT, Uncharted, Forza, and GTA ?

here is a quote from EA:
"Nintendo was dead to us very quickly," one EA source told me when asked about why the publisher fell out with Nintendo so soon after committing to the system.

"It became a kids IP platform and we don't really make games for kids. That was pretty true across the other labels too. Even the Mass Effect title on Wii U, which was a solid effort, could never do big business, and EA like Activision is only focused on games that can be big franchises".

EA one of the biggest names in vidoegames says its a kids console. Its one thing that you enjoy games that are targeted for kids(or family) its another to say that the console is NOT made with children in mind.

Sony launched Playstation with a campaign to move the image of consoles from a "kids toy" to an adult's entertainment device and they did that by launching games like Resident Evil when Nintendo was making Donkey Kong Country. Playstation's strategy succeeded about 3 times now against 1 time for Nintendo (ps1,ps2, and ps4 so far).

I can gift a 30 year old colleague a copy of the next Halo or Assassin's Creed but I am afraid he would take it as an insult if I gift him Kirby or Toad.

I agree . I noticed forum members here are Nintendo biased and they would get excited over Captain Toad : Treasure Tracker more than the next GTA .

The reason why Mass Effect 3 sold poorly on Wii U, was because it was a 9 month old game and relatively mediocre port, released at full retail price, when the entire trilogy boxset could be had for the same price (or even a little cheaper) on the PS3 or 360.

Well that's because GTA in all honestly, is a cash in series as much as any major non-nintendo series to be honest. It's sad but that happens to a ton of games now a days...

I don't think it has anything to with being biased towards Nintendo, but more being excited for a new, fresh IP that isn't a rehash of the same old crap that GTA has been doing for years. I personally have no interest in games like CoD or GTA, and have no urge to play them, but I'm always interested in seeing a new idea for a game regardless of the console it's launched on.
