Its a myth. If I remember correctly the DAC (Asahi Kasei AK4309AVM) in it is legit but the overall quality is only good, not excellent. The same DAC is used in the 5501, but it does not have the direct outputs. However, you can mod either model to be a great mid 90s audiophile cd player. However for the cost of the components you can get an entry level modern audiophile cd player that will blow it out of the water.
