I thought it was kinda funny.

It's a big issue though. I think the current trend that was spearheaded by Kotaku against UbiSoft like, they're a bunch of women haters, is kinda short sighted.

UbiSoft, in particular, has a pretty long history of strong female protagonists. Far above average.

That being said, their current trends are likely due to what they think will sell the numbers they want or need. It's up to the consumer to actually buy games and rave about games that do what they like. Currently, consumers are saying ... we like those ultra-macho games the most.

Ultimately, the joke comment has a point. The world isn't fair. It just isn't. You can't stand by and expect people to suit your tastes, even if your tastes are entirely justified and should be the norm. You have to actually make an effort to change what happens.

Issues like women's roles are getting more awareness around them, but I still think everything, on the side of publishers, and the side of journalists, is being handled with so little tact, it's pretty embarrassing to watch.

While it is clearly BS that companies can't have playable female characters in games with generic characters who don't really affect the story in anyway or have no story to begin with (most online FPS games, for example), it is ridiculous to expect female character options in games with strong character-driven narratives as it pretty much requires a full rewrite of the game to make it work.

I've never played an Ass Creed game before so I have no idea what the story is going to be able or anything like that, but if it is going to have an emphasis on story then I can totally understand why they'd leave female characters out. If anything, hold games like Call of Duty to the fire for having storyless modes continue to give no female player options.

Or, even better, make your own game. Anita, despite admitting to not being a gamer (although when she thought she wasn't on camera), still has a massive following in the gaming community. There's no reason she can't gather up enough people to make her own game. Hell, there's been games made entirely by one person. It's far better to add something to the market instead of demand the market change just for you.

I mean, you have all those people complaining about the lack of a playable female character in Zelda, yet they completely skip right over a game like Midora, a game which is going to play like a Zelda title and feature a female character. It doesn't make any freaking sense to me. People will bitch all day that a Triple A title doesn't cater to their needs, yet when another smaller game of good quality does cater to that, they just step right over it. If you don't show you are willing to buy something, then no one is ever going to change the way they do things because why would they? You don't buy it when it's there!

This is like someone complaining about public transit that's always late and having someone respond with "well why don't you just build your own bus?"

Or someone complaining about poor service in a restaurant and having someone else say "well why don't you just become a chef and open your own?"

It's not an argument or a rebuttal. It's a lazy dismissal.

What I find most telling is that virtually all the fedora'd young men creating "response" videos/rants/etc to Anita S. have no ammunition except this bullshit and other old saws: she's not a real gamer, it's not her own footage, she doesn't really play video games, etc. Anything to avoid the issue at hand, amirite?

(by the way, the fact that one must be some sort of "social justice warrior" to find merit in her work is totally bogus)
