Any updates or ideas about this?
I'm getting a PSOne to do this exact same thing.
Fixing scph 1001 fmv issues
Re: Fixing scph 1001 fmv issues
Just my brief experience with the 1001 drive...
I got a free 1001 from a friend some years back. It can't read anything 99% of the time. The 1% of the time it will load something, it would take forever. I heard about being able to swap in the assembly from a PSone, but I hate doing stuff like that. I don't wanna take an otherwise perfectly operating PSone out of commission.
So I tried a replacement laser from eBay. STAY AWAY. These things are very poorly made. The one I got didn't work AT ALL. And I didn't just have a dud, that's just the way they are. After reading some more and talking with people, I haven't ever seen or heard of some one that had a replacement drive working.
So, I'm just keeping my eye out for a PSone with a working drive that is broken in some other way. Of course, this is rare. The thing that usually goes bad is the drive, on any disc based console.

Yeah, I had two replacement lasers, and they don't work at all.
What a joke.
I've heard really good things about the PSOne laser and the 1001, but one fellow in this thread couldn't get it to work right.
I wish he had followed up on that.

I would just wait until PSIO comes out (projected within this year). IMO, that's where the 1001's in the world will start strutting their stuff again.

I have a 7501 that is still kicking, but as soon as PSIO is available, I will put most of my collection on SD cards for use on it.
Otherwise, I have a PSOne for anything else.
If you absolutely must play your physical discs, a newer, more reliable model is really your only reasonable option, IMO (or a PS3 would be a good alternative too).

A PS1 drive emulator that loads game images and has virtual memory card and GameShark code support?

So sell my chipped SCPH1001 now is what you are saying
Re: Fixing scph 1001 fmv issues
Nah, I wouldn't think in this case. PS1s aren't worth a whole lot as it is. PS1 mod chips are super cheap as well. The MM3 chip is a single PIC, in fact. This drive emulator will cost more due to the hardware, it wont be for everyone. I think there will still be a demand for chipped PS1s after this thing is released, for all the people that don't wanna spend that much money. I'm willing to bet paying some one to install a chip for you would still be cheaper.

Valid points. Truth be told, I have not turned on a Sony system in atleast a year. Mine SCPH1001 was actually modded by Snow Kitty.

Agreed, but as for myself, I am completely pre-sold on the option. I know it won't be cheap, but I love playing my collection on actual hardware without the abuse and fear of inevitable system failure.Ziggy587 wrote:Nah, I wouldn't think in this case. Actually, I would keep it until psio is released, then sell it as a feature to one of us here. I don't need it personally, but always liked how the 1001 units have a direct AV out port.fastbilly1 wrote:So sell my chipped SCPH1001 now is what you are saying

If it weren't for NetFlix on the PS3, I could say the same thing at times.fastbilly1 wrote:Valid points. Truth be told, I have not turned on a Sony system in atleast a year. Mine SCPH1001 was actually modded by Snow Kitty.
One of my PS1s is a chipped 7501 that I got form Snow Kitty.
Yeah, same here. Disc drives are the #1 failure point, so I think these types of things are really important.nightrnr wrote:but I love playing my collection on actual hardware without the abuse and fear of inevitable system failure.
They're suppose to have REALLY good audio quality. Like, audiophile quality.nightrnr wrote:but always liked how the 1001 units have a direct AV out port.
