What RPG are you playing right now?
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
In terms of games in the style of EotB, Dungeon Master is the game generally thought of as starting the genre of real time first person dungeon crawling. Then there's Lands of Lore, made by Westwood after they split from SSI, so while it's not a D&D game it very clearly is an immediate descendent of EotB.

Ya know, if dishy wants to continue rolling with the Sega CD he should check out Dungeon Master II: Skullkeep. One of those rare Sega CD RPGs that isn't expensive at all (well neither is the Sega CD EotB now that I think of it).

I would consider Stonekeep, it us one of the first of that type that I played.dsheinem wrote:Started up Legend of Grimrock because
A) it is easy to run on a laptop and looks ace on my macbook pro (my desktop PC is out of commission for now)
B) My recent trek through Eye of the Beholder was my first experience with the subgenre, and I want to see what it looks like today...
There's some things that I like better about the systems used in Grimrock, but on the other hand there are some things that EotB did that are strangely missing from this one (e.g. the spell-learning system seems simplified in LoG).
I am also curious: what other "key" games exist in the vein? What are the "must plays" between EotB and Grimrock (and, perhaps, anything that's come out since)?
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

Try Orcs & Elves. Developed by John Carmack and id Software, it is a classic of mobile gaming. Despite its relatively short length (5-6 hours) and lack of difficulty, I enjoyed my time with the Nintendo DS port immensely. Oh man, that sounds perfect. Carmack's attachment has me immensely interested.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Try Orcs & Elves. Developed by John Carmack and id Software, it is a classic of mobile gaming. For those of you who enjoyed Orcs & Elves on DS, I think you should check this out too:
I found many similarities between the two.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Been bashing it out on New Vegas. I really have a love/hate relationship with this game. As great as it is, sometimes it drives me nuts.

Another +1 for O&E. Not a super deep game but quite fun.

Have to say, I've only played a couple minutes of it, but Honest Hearts might be the best piece of DLC ever made. Beautiful landscape, great atmosphere, and I feel so invested in the characters.
Honestly, if Fallout was like this more of the time, it would be my favorite series, no doubt.

I'm 2 battles away from finishing Shining Force 3 Sc 2. But recently I've been playing Paper Mario on the N64. The kid navigates the world, I do the battles as I've got much better timing
We're tackling the Koopa Bros. fortress and the game has certainly gotten more interesting. I found Super Mario RPG (Wii downlaod) to be a bit repetitious and boring but Paper Mario rights most of those issues.
