Do you feel bad about buying new(ish) releases used?
Re: Do you feel bad about buying new(ish) releases used?
If only big name games would stop coming out as 59.99 all the time then maybe it wouldn't be so bad
people let their wallets talk and that price may be good for some but for me it doesn't work. Especially with knack(yeah that one did finally get one but it took forever) seemed like a great game on demo but not a game I'd pay the 59.99 for, at 39 or 29 maybe I'd consider it. Which it is at now so maybe I will consider it unlike before. Once game revs get over that 59 in all the future stuff(and next gen after the one we're entering). Especially because I still think it's why we see so many good games get expensive later to some extent....

It'd be nice, but I don't see it happening. I remember big name games being $49.99 for the NES, when you account for inflation that's closer to $80 than $60, meaning the real cost of games has actually gone down over the last 20 years (Source: http://www.dollartimes.com/inflation/in ... &year=1994)
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

Re: Do you feel bad about buying new(ish) releases used?
for the last 2 years, i bought used games, from that one shop in my area. not because they have better price, they usually are pricier, but because they are an independant chain in japan, only located in my prefecture. That same prefecture was hit by the tsunami 3 years ago and some stores had to be closed. they lost a redicoulous amount of retro games and consoles, that no insurance will be able to recup. it doesnt matter if you get some money, you simply cant get back that merchandise that took years to get from traders. they are still open, but i fear for their future.
So its interesting to hear from most of you that the 2 options are a) encourage developper by buying new, or b) giving ur money to gamestop by buying used. obviously, there is little to no competition in the us when it comes to used games, but here, the second option makes a lot more sense. you are keeping alive some really passionated small scale businesses. the people that work in those shops are amazing and never push the sales. they are ready to look into their computer and search for a while to check if the game/console you are looking for is available.
they give you a free 3 months warranty on used console, they make sure games work, they have fun ways of collecting points from their store, they festivals every seasons (for example, right now is the sony matsuri (festival) all psp ps1 ps2 games are 50% off for fews days!) the hunt for games is on and i went to 6 shops this week to find the best deals on sony games. all in all, i prefer this way, and if i can help a 25 years old local company recup from the desaster, ill be more than happy.
I think the same about the local restaurants that were destroyed. incould pay 8$ to get the ingredients at the grocery store and cook it myself, or i coupd go to those temporary restaurant to help the cooks that lost their businesses during the tsunami to pile up some money to reopen. it only cost me 2-3$ more to help them on a daily basis, and i get to interact with them, instead of going to a branch super market and get cheap grocery. (and i save time on cooking, save money on gas/water and i dont have to clean my dishes!)
anyway, sorry for the long post

Re: Do you feel bad about buying new(ish) releases used?
When I buy used games I don't buy them from GameStop. That is not the only place to get used games in the USA. Typically I buy them from independent sellers from online sites such as eBay or Half.com.
And on topic, no I do not feel bad buying new(ish) games used.

Re: Do you feel bad about buying new(ish) releases used?
Only bad thing about buying new-ish games used is that makes it really look like the game did poorly since they don't count used sales in the sold number last I checked. I don't feel guilty because I want to play these games but 49+ is a lot on one game, but dang used seems rather enticing sometimes....

Re: Do you feel bad about buying new(ish) releases used?
Once you buy and open a new game it is a used game. So congrats, you can brag to your friends you "bought that game new!" like it's some kind of trophy.
Look, I got to feed my self first before I support people in a game company I will never meet and their families. Then, I have other hobbies that take money, also. Do you know what $60 could buy? A ton of food, several movies, lots of music, household goods, etc, a ticket to something you enjoy...a nice present for your girlfriend....
Also, now that I'm all grown up, if I seriously told my Gf that I dropped nearly $70, with tax, on a game, she would probably dump me, or least change her views on me. What with the other important things in life.
In the end I've always found that it's regrettable to spend too much money on games, when I think bout what else I could have done with it.

They have escaped into the mansion where they thought it was safe, yet.

Well $60 could buy just near 120 vhs's from goodwill

I just buy what I want used, new, or partially loved. I have more important things to worry about than feeling bad about about buying new releases used.

Re: Do you feel bad about buying new(ish) releases used?
I don't think I have ever purchased a game brand new in my entire life. I rarely own current gen stuff. I have enough consoles and games to keep me entertained for several years. I probably own over 100 games I haven't even had the time to play yet, so I can hold out on buying the current stuff until it reaches prices I find acceptable. I don't currently own a PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, PS Vita... I don't even have a PS3 or 360. So the ethics of new vs used doesn't even come into play. Though if it did, I likely would still never buy a game at full retail. People enter the market at different price points, mine just happens to be low. But frugality is just a way of life with me I hardly buy anything new. Vehicles, furniture, dishes, lawnmowers, appliances, tools, you name it. But it works for me. I can afford to live off a shitty minimum wage job where I can slack off and read books all day. I own a decent house and don't accept any welfare from the government. So you can have a lot for a little money.

Re: Do you feel bad about buying new(ish) releases used?
I generally gameshare new releases so new PS3 games cost me $10-$20. Say what you want about gamesharing but at least the dev get's chalk up one more sale. It's better than buying it used and them getting no sale. If you only want to count disc games then no, I don't feel bad. I almost always buy disc based games used unless it's some super high-risk game that the devs are counting on. Even then I don't always buy new.
