MegaDrive Model 1, IC BD M5 PAL display problem, Red lines

Post by retroborg »

Good day.
So, I got my hands on this Mega Drive Model I, IC BD M5 PAL.

But when I plug it to the TV either via RGB Scart or RF and start it, these red horizontal lines scrolling downwards are displayed on the screen and there is no sound.
Upon visual inspection on the Mother board, I did not detect any obvious damage.
So, does any one have an idea of what could be the cause of the problem and a solution?
Thanks in advance

In one of your other threads you were asking about a Genesis. So I'm assuming you're in the States. That being the case, you have a PAL MegaDrive now. Are you sure that your monitor/TV supports PAL 50Hz? Because that's what it would look like if it doesn't.

edit: If your TV/monitor doesn't support PAL 50Hz, one option would be to mod your MegaDrive. Just note, you'd have to not only mod it for 60Hz, but also for NTSC. I found this out when I scored a PAL SNES. I changed it to 60Hz but the colors were very wrong. It had to be further modified for NTSC.

Hi and thanks for the reply.
No I'm not in the States, I'm in Europe.
It's not a problem with my TV. I'm using a SONY 21" CRT TV and it's perfectly capable of displaying at both 50/60HZ using an RGB Scart cable.

It's definitely a problem with the console.
