What was the last movie you've seen?

Those of you who still buy movies on disc, where do you order from?

I buy my discs from local pawn shops. Standard DVDs there are $0.99 and Blu-Ray discs are $3.99. Admittedly, however, my disc purchasing habits have subsided significantly since my wife and I began subscribing to Netflix and Hulu+.

THEY CAME TOGETHER

I hate using the word, but "meh" describes this film.

There are a very few great moments, mostly by the way of cameos, but every set up for a joke is obvious. And the pay off for those jokes, well, doesn't pay off.

I wouldn't pay to see it.

That's too bad. Despite Ebert's review, I really liked Wet Hot American Summer. My wife also loves ridiculing bad romantic comedies, and we were looking forward to this.

Finally, my wife and I watched:



Pale Flower (1964) last night. It is a beautifully shot and scored, new wave, yakuza, film noir...which makes it just about perfect for me. I cannot recommend it highly enough. (It is available for streaming on Hulu+.)

Dude, I raid the $7 BluRay bins at Walmart. They discount stuff fast there.
Also Costco.

Sometimes Best Buy.

I almost never buy movies from Amazon, they're too expensive.

Should really raid the goodwill's(heck I'm even seeing some pop up with blu rays and was half tempted to pick up the spiderman 3 though I'm not passing up 50 cent movies ) 50 cent - $2 ain't bad on a single movie. and my shelfs are a lot fuller than they should be >_>

Labyrinth man...:

David Bowie not in spandex or leather is horrific.

The movie is perfect on every level from script to direction.

The fart swamp, the musical scenes, the creepy hand characters, and even the teenage angst is all awesome.

Dance magic dance.

Still love the movie, but the idea of Spandex wearing Bowie with long nails holding your baby brother really makes the movie have that scary edge for me.

Listen, Coop. Last night was really great. You were incredibly romantic and heroic, no doubt about it. And that's great. But I've thought about it, and my thing is this: Andy is really hot. And don't get me wrong, you're cute too, but Andy is like, *cut*. From marble. He's gorgeous. He has this beautiful face and this incredible body, and I genuinely don't care that he's kinda lame. I don't even care that he cheats on me. And I like you more than I like Andy, Coop, but I'm 16. Professional Duder,

If you like silly rom-coms, by all means you might like THEY CAME TOGETHER. Just don't expect the comedy punches that THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY or WEDDING CRASHERS provided.

There are some great moments, but the vast majority of the jokes are phoned in and lame. This example isn't in the movie, but think "There's a guy dressed as a fire hydrant to promote fire safety and someone with ten dogs walks by". Guess what happens next?

Some people might dig knowing exactly what will happen and smile and say "Oh man! I bet those dogs pee on that dude dressed as a hydrant!", but that's not what I enjoy. At all.

And to be honest and clarify my sense of humor, one of the funniest things that has caught me off guard was in MEAN GIRLS when the blonde was hit by a bus, Sure I love the Marx Brothers, but that "I didn't see that coming" humor tickles my ribs more than anything else. Cameos aside (woo-hoo! some dudes make an appearance) THEY CAME TOGETHERdoesn't have any of that.

And if you have a cameo, have a pullback joke.

Example:

Carrie Fisher in JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK.

Wasn't just "hey, here is Carrie Fisher, so be happy with seeing her". The line "No more hairy bush Nuns" made the cameo meaningful. Same with "PHANTOMS like a mother fucker".

Not to go on a diatribe (but I am) but "here's something you might know" know stinks skunk butt. The recent "satire" movies aren't satire. They just show stuff like B Spears hitting a car with an umbrella. No joke. Just "hey you remember this? Here it is again".


AUSTIN POWERS : GOLDMEMBER

A parody of a parody...of a parody of a movie.

It's not good, it's not bad, but it is a movie that is great for a lazy day.

Both previous entries are better as far as film is concerned, but this entry in the AP trilogy is by far the silliest.

Every scene seems improvised and I'm not even sure if there was a script.

People and times change, and when I first saw this movie in a theater I was dating a cute little number named Nicki. She and I both hated it because we felt it took two hours out of what would we rather would be doing.

Over the years, and multiple viewings, I have grown to like it for what it is.

It's dumb. Over the top. Off the cuff. Stupid and silly. And the framing is film school 101.

But that was their goal, so they achieved what they set out to accomplish. Can't fault someone for achieving their goal.

Thor: The Dark World. Kind of came and went, I figured I'd see it when it showed up on TV. Which is exactly what I did. But I thought it was excellent! Despite the dreary tone of the trailers, this one was funnier and more exciting than the first. For all the comic book movies that come and go, having watched this one now, I can say that Marvel has yet to have a real miss. Sure some of them are less engaging than others (Iron Man 2...) but all are worth at least a single watch.

I went to the Drive-Ins with my gf on Friday, and we saw two movies.

Transformers - God, was this movie terrible. Aside from Baysplosions and Marky Mark, I haven't seen a worse movie in a while. The writing was god-awful, acting was bad, and the girl's white coat stayed completely white and dirt-free while she tumbled out of cars, got captured by robots and put in a gross prison thing, etc. It was just bad.

Neighbors - After almost 3 hours of terrible movie, I was ready to go home. Arin really wanted to stay for the second movie, though, so I said I'd give it a shot.

Man, was I glad I did!

I loved neighbors, which I in no way expected. Zac Efron was hilarious, Seth Rogen was obviously great, lots of attractive people doing ridiculous things. If the whole "movie-frat-houses-are-way-different-from-real-ones" bugs you, then the movie probably isn't for you, but if you can suspend that disbelief, I highly recommend it.
