Scratched 360 Games

Post by maiku »

I picked up the last used copy of Mass Effect from Blockbuster the other day. It's scratched but seems to play ok. I probably won't be able to really play it for a few weeks. Is there a good test to make sure the disc won't crap out half-way through the game? I thought about loading it to the HD but I think I'll need a dashboard update first. Thanks.

Not really. The only way to know is to play the game.

Copying the game to the hard drive might work but then AFAIK it doesn't do any sort of integrity check once copied to the hard drive. If it finds any DREs it will just tell you that it failed to copy the game. I'd try copying it to the hard drive.

Yeah, the best way to find out is to import it to the hard drive. If your Xbox can't read anything on the disc, it'll just say the disc is unreadable and won't import it. If it does, just buff out the scratches enough until it does and you should be good.

From my experience most games either work or they don't with a scratch. I have had a few games that just won't read at all from a scratch.

Can you exchange it at a different Blockbuster? Just a thought.

There's one other thing you can do, but it's a bit unethical and will cost you a few extra bucks. Rent a copy and switch the disks.

Thanks for the responses. Problem averted...I ordered a new copy from a Buy.com sale this morning ($12).

Blockbuster has been running a B1G1 used sale and most of the stores are pretty picked over. This copy was the last in my area. I can exchange it for another similarly priced game but I'm not so sure I'll be able to find anything interesting. I'll try the HD import and maybe ebay it if it goes well.
