How many people bought the Wii U for MK8? 100,000? I don't know. Does it matter? Not according to Ziggy.BogusMeatFactory wrote: When you break Dsh down to purchase a system he has been so outspoken against...you know you are on to something.

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
Reggie claimed compared to the two weeks prior to Mario Kart 8's launch, to the two weeks after it, the Wii U sales quadrupled on a daily basis. So, instead of 4K a day, they're selling 16K a day. Which means, if that was consistent up to today, that'd be about 448K units since Mario Kart 8 launched. (528K by the end of June)
And I think those numbers are North America only. So, who knows what the actual total is worldwide.
I don't think Nintendo is particularly proud of the system's performance, even with Mario Kart 8, but they need to get the news out there that people are buying the system and the games so that others will go, "alright, maybe I'll get one".
A lot of people will simply refuse to buy something if they feel that other people aren't also buying it. So, it's an important thing to do.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that you can't call something a failure simply by the quantities sold. There's many other things that determine it. Having many, many unsold Dreamcasts in a warehouse, I'd call that a failure. The Wii U, well, let's just wait and see.

I feel like you're missing my point. I never said that console sales don't matter AT ALL, I just said that they can't be the only factor when talking about if a console is a "failure" or not. If you wanna take a snippet of my post to try and sum up what I was trying to get across, I think this one would be better...
Sales, just that number by itself, is meaningless to us without other information. For example, comparing Wii U sales to PS2 sales (which was posted a couple pages back) is not a good way to determine if the U is a failure of a console or not. THATS what I'm saying.Ziggy wrote:It's not the simple fact of low sales that made the systems failures, there's more details that add up to a bigger picture.

Low sales combined with other non-sales-related but positive details = a possibly successful console (i.e., Wii U perhaps)
Low sales combined with non-sales-related but negative details = a possibly failing console (i.e. Saturn/Dreamcast perhaps)
Closer to your point?
When I compared PS2 to Wii U earlier, I was just saying that it puts the U sales figure into perspective. My point was that 7 million is a large number out of context, but it is a small number compared to 158 million.
That being said, I don't think comparing a console to the top 5 or 10 best-selling consoles of all time is a completely ridiculous way to judge said console.

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I think a console can only be called a failure if the people who buy it greatly regret it. For example the Saturn was more of a failure than the Dreamcast for the average gamer in the west because it had a much more niche library (not to mention some of its best games stayed in Japan)
