What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
Tires are one of those things that I really hate having to spend money on. Luckily, the car I have now, the tires were pretty much brand new when I got the car. I drove them for four years before getting new ones, I guess you can't ask for more than that. They were looking pretty bad toward the end.
Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
Well the thing is i don't know if the wheels on mine have been touched but it's nice to know my parents are going to help replace them and that each tire only costs 68(which is better than the 100-150+ my dad's cost) since it is time. But dang it if i was going to have to do the 100k checkup next month(it's only going to cost 345 last I checked but that's still a week and a half's pay almost it feels like...hope my dad can help me with that otherwise that's going to suck...(though supposedly if a lead clerk position opens up and my new assistant manager goes manager he's supposedly going to offer me the position since it would mean more money and a earlier shift ^_^ )

One way to save money is to learn to do those things yourself. Obvioiusly you cant balance and mount tires without the machine, but general checkups and maintenance can prolong the life of your vehicle and pad your wallet

Yeah, I agree. I try and do as much work as I can myself. Luckily for me, my brother is a mechanic. So anything I can't do myself I ask him to help me with. I hate having to bring my car in for service. Not just paying for labor, but I don't like other people touching my car. When you do the work yourself, you know it was done right. I've never brought my car in for an oil change, I always do it myself.SirGawain wrote:darsparx wrote:Well the thing is i don't know if the wheels on mine have been touched but it's nice to know my parents are going to help replace them and that each tire only costs 68(which is better than the 100-150+ my dad's cost) since it is time. I replaced my waterpump last weekend and it cost me 75 for the part and a couple hours labor vs almost 400 from a shop
But anyway... Brakes, belts, oil change, spark plugs, air filter, etc are all fairly easy things to do in the driveway with only a core set of tools. Invest ~$20 in the repair manual for your car. It has a section for recommended maintenance (time and/or mileage). Anything that isn't clear enough in the manual, if you have at least a fairly popular car, you can usually find the job on YouTube.

Which reminds me...
My check engine light has been on for weeks now. I have a scanner, so I know exactly what it is. It's the fuel canister. So it's nothing that's hampering performance or gas mileage, and there's no worries driving it. But the cheapest I can find the part is $325 for a Duralast (Auto Zone's brand). My inspection is up in August, so I have to replace it before then. I really, really don't wanna spend the money on it tho.
Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
^That +1000. I think anything vehicle wise can be found with 5 min, youtube, and common sense. Ill use my recent mechanic endeavors as an example. I found a video for changing the water pump on a 2003 Silverado. The trucks, engine wise were the same from 99-06 and some 07s. Knowing what model years are compatible with yours is probably the most useful piece of knowledge there is.Ziggy587 wrote:Anything that isn't clear enough in the manual, if you have at least a fairly popular car, you can usually find the job on YouTube.
Mine is on as well, but it is a $700 sensor that serves little to no purpose. I would rather spend $150 for a bypass.Ziggy587 wrote:Which reminds me...

Tires and brakes are the most important things on your car. Stopping and being able to go in the direction you're pointed are more important than anything else.darsparx wrote:- mom doesn't want me driving on it much until we can get the tires replaced(it's about time anyways)

I'd argue if the front of your car is reinforced enough that stopping is optional.Hobie-wan wrote:Tires and brakes are the most important things on your car.
