Best GameBoy Color games for a starter collection

Post by RyaNtheSlayA »

I never had a GB growing up, I had a GameGear which then proceeded to a GameBoy Color in 2001. Granted, this was the last year that I remember seeing them and as such I was only able to get a handfull of games even after 3-4 years. So I finally picked up a free ice purple GBC w/ a near perfect screen and battery cover and am looking for good games exclusive to the GBC (i have an original gameboy as well). So far very few have picked up my intrest except for GTA2 and Metal Gear Solid. So im curious, for the gamer that likes quik sessions of blowing things up and just in general action adventure games, what would you recommend (no Zelda plz)

edit: sorry about the double post,

pokemon?
I enjoyed the Megaman X-treme games.
In all honesty I actually never really got involved in GBC games so I would like to see what people suggest. The only old game boy games I have are Donkey Kong (not the arcade game), Battle Arena Toshinden, Donkey Kong Land, Mario Land 2 and Star Wars.

For sheer impressiveness of graphics, you should check out Alone In The Dark.

There's the obvious Metroid II and Zelda: Link's Awakening. The Dragon Quest Monsters games are really good too. And you can't forget the two Zelda Oracle games.

The GBC Bionic Commando is pretty rockin', though many of the carts have a bug where you can't save (or rather, the save is corrupted) after the first couple levels. Still, the animation is good and gameplay fun.

Pokemon Blue/Red/Yellow
PokemonGold/Silver/Crystal
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe
Metroid II Return of Samus
Wario Land 3
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
Kirby's Dreamland 2

All are very good imo.

Besides the first party stuff, I can't find any decent GB titles. There's very little on here that hasn't been drastically improved on with GBA. I mean why play Mario Golf when theres Mario Golf on GBA and it's better?

In an attempt to suggest something more unknown, have you looked into Shantae? It's a platformer where you play as a sexy female genie who can transform into animals and it was one of the last games to be released on the GBC before the GBA's release. It also didn't get the recognition it deserved because of it. It's a great game, but it's damn difficult to find so it may not be good for a starter collection.

Actually, all of those excluding Crystal can be played on the original GameBoy.
