moving to a tiny island

i recently got accepted for a job teaching english in japan, and was excited that i'd be fulfilling a long-term goal of mine. my experience teaching has been one of the few jobs that i enjoyed enough to say that i could do it for the rest of my life, and to finally be able to stay in japan on a visa that wasn't for a tourist or a student while making good money at the same time makes it all the better.
but then last week, i finally found out exactly where i'll be in japan and was in a state of shock...

...a small island on the inland sea, with a population of less than 300 people!
whoa... uh... wow...

my means of escape are a ferry that runs only 4 times a day (!) to neighboring islands, which i have to commute to in order to make it to the mainland - about a 2 hour trip. and if i don't get on the ferry going back home by 7:30pm, i'll have to find somewhere else to sleep (or get real good at swimming). daaaayamn!

looks like i'll have more free time to play video games again though. and jump back onto the forums

funny thing is, that question has been something i've asked myself at least twice a week for the past 10 years. you can also replace the word "game" with system, record, tape, video, food, book, instrument, etc...
since my luggage space will be extremely limited, i'll be bringing my stereo & s-video modded genesis 3, my psOne (modded by ApolloBoy!), and my ds lite for sure. also bring a super everdrive and everdrive64 and will eventually get those consoles somewhere in japan.

since i will be so far away from major cities, and won't even have a post office on my island, i'll say short answer no. BUT, getting this job is all part of my master plan to open my own store in japan in the next 5 years (real talk) and i will definitely sell retro games there. in other words, ask me again in 5 years

Best of luck man! I think that sounds pretty great, actually; both my girlfriend and I are going for our TEFLs soon, and we'd looooove to move to Japan ^^

Is it in the north or south (Okinawa ftw)? Do you have any tips for people like me?

Will you have home access to the internet from this little island? Also, something to consider is sea mail. For example, if you want cold-weather clothes, send them sea mail in August and they'll arrive by the time it starts to get cold. Sea mail is cheap and is very good for durable stuff like clothing that can be bumped around no problem. Might also be worth paying extra bag fees to take more stuff with you, since once you're there you'll probably not have a solid lifeline home.

i think it's too late for that Brad, a small group of us (w/ Dakinggamer87 and ApolloBoy) got together few months back for his departure. i believe Chris current resident right now is in TX.
