Both AMD and Nvidia have slowed down their shipments of cards due to low sales so I would personally hold off for a bit before pulling the trigger on a card because prices should be dropping very soon. The 290 I linked was $459 just a couple of days ago. Depending on how much airflow your case has a reference blower card might be better than a third party fan solution.
Get a solid state dude face! I can't believe no one suggested that yet.
I don't need a new HDD. Not as part of the build, anyway.

Yea that's why I originally posted the 290 since that price is amazing. I can almost guarantee that the price will drop on the 780's very soon so if you can hold off on it a bit it might be for the best. Maybe go set up an account on pcpartpicker so you can get an alert when the price drops to something you're more comfortable paying.
And yea the ssd isn't needed but trust me you want one unless you're one of those weird people that just leaves your computer on all the time and the prices are dropping on them pretty nicely lately too so you can get 250 GB one for about 100

Yeah I have been watching them and have noticed. It is just a matter of what do I want to spend when. I am replacing a busted PC instead of upgrading parts in a busted one, so I have to get a lot at once and a HDD isn't one of those that I need off the bat.
I want to make sure my existing PC really is dead/unfixable before I go all in on a new build. I found an old video card (GeForce 2 MX!) that I tried plugging in to see if I could get some video…and the PC still powered off after about five seconds without the screen ever going on. So, at this point, I suspect my power supply.
I also found out the local Staples will test a PSU for free, so I am taking mine there shortly. If I can just replace that and limp along on my current rig for a bit longer then I can really hold out for a better system (and the price drop that accompanies the next gen of cards and processors) to upgrade everything else. Buying just a PSU now would be a nice solution, so fingers crossed it is that simple

So I put my friends PC together today but didn't have a windows disc on hand so that's on hold until tomorrow. Everything went well and the system booted up on the first try so it should be good to go tomorrow when I get the disc.
I've got one question that I'm not sure on though. The video card takes two 6 pin connectors from the power supply does it need to be two separate cords from the PSU or can I use one since they both split off at the end and have two six plus twos. It's one of those little things I just don't know and I'm not sure if I did it correctly.
