Well shit.
girlfriend's mom had an eviction in 2011 we forgot about (it wasn't a problem getting into this house), so our application to the apartment was denied.
...that sort of thing is a big problem, we need her income to even qualify for any of the places we've looked at, that eviction might make it impossible to get into ANY apartment. Money isn't even the problem, saving up for a while won't fix that.
This sucks. Now I *really* don't know what to do now.
...I might not be able to move after all

Not to pry too much and feel free not to answer, but if you and/or your gf has a job, shouldn't that be enough? Maybe things have changed in the last 10 years or so since I was apartment hunting, but I pretty much just needed pay stubs, info about previous places I'd lived, etc. Like you, at the time I had virtually no credit history, either.AppleQueso wrote: ...that sort of thing is a big problem, we need her income to even qualify for any of the places we've looked at
Maybe things are diff in TX, maybe they are different in 2014…but it seems like if you have combined income that would clearly cover rent and other bills, you don't have many or any bad marks on your credit history, and you don't have some kind of criminal history, most places should be happy to rent to you...

Apparently the rental market in Austin is really tight, things like past evictions are huge red flags I guess.
Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
My point was: why even include her on the application if you are making enough to pay for your own apartment? If she is going to be paying for it or is the co-signer or some such, then yes - I can see where a past eviction is a reasonable cause for an application denial.AppleQueso wrote:Apparently the rental market in Austin is really tight, things like past evictions are huge red flags I guess.

I'm moving into a new apartment this September and I was kind of shocked at how many hoops you had to jump through to get a place. My first apartment out of school was just with a friend of a friend who was a landlord and she just had me sign a couple things and I moved in. But this time I had to fill out a long application with a credit check and proof of gainful employment. I was shocked you had to make 3 times your rent a month to even qualify, I make $25 an hour and I barely qualified for a $750/m 1 bedroom apartment, not sure how most people make it now days.

From my experience, trying to get a decent to nice place in Austin is a pain. Rent is high there for old worn down apartments.
You have a huge college and a strong growing economy and population and they didnt develop the city infrastructure well for it. I had considered going to UT at one point and was college hunting, and have had friends who live there and heard the same.
It is just going to be one of those things that will be rough, but you gotta keep trying and you will get one.

Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
in any case I don't really see how I'll be able to find an apartment within the next two weeks or so with that stuff looming
i'm gonna have to back up and see about rearranging a lot of things in my life, find out what we need to do
gonna ask at work tonight about cancelling my transfer
EDIT: Okay I think after some talks and planning I'm going to set my move in plans back a good bit and try to simply make it a goal to get to Austin by the end of the year. Gonna just have me and my girlfriend move without her mom, arrange some other stuff. This is going to work out I think.

I need to get this work stuff fixed first and go from there. I'll probably send you a PM. Gonna start at square one and try this again, this time I'm gonna focus on finding an apartment BEFORE setting up a store transferaaron wrote: best of luck, AQ. i have some friends in Austin i could put you in touch with but i dunno how much help they'd be. i can at least ask them for some leads and forward them to you. pm me if ya want.
