The shotgun is great as it eats bullets. I think that becomes available in Stage 2.
All weapons, including the Shot Gun are available right away. It's just a matter of shooting them before you miss them.
The weapon order is (starting with POW and between POW's) -
3-Way - Shell - Laser - Shot Gun - Side "Assist" Planes
Some items, such as the side planes, are available in Stage 3 just on their own. I like getting the planes earlier, but they seem to eat up the weapon timer a bit faster.
To get the defensive loop, press both buttons at the same time. Notice you only get two per stage in Kai, compared to three in the regular 1943.
The weather attacks are still here by pressing Button 2. They take some of your energy/fuel however.
Laser is good on all bosses, I need to say that again!
Finally, as soon as the larger bombers appear, get rid of them ASAP. Otherwise, they add a lot of shots in addition to the shots from everything else on the screen.
