I read not even half a page of the DigitPress thread until I had to stop. My reaction to this type of stuff, as a nerd myself, is always "God I fucking hate nerds". I'm sure I sound like an outsider or something when I say this but get a friggin' life seriously.

I love games and I'm on forums like this every day, multiple times a day but my god we're arguing over video games for Christ's sake. Coincidentally right now two of my FB friends are arguing about PC/console and both texting me about it bitching about the other. That's not a joke unfortunately.

I tried stopping him man, perhaps if we were closer "boys" I would have gotten through to him and convinced him to walk away before he brought down the shitstorm on himself, but alas.

Only can feel so sorry for someone who brings these things on themselves and begs for the attention. At least it appears to have cooled down slightly on DP :|

All I have learned from this event is that Digit Press is not blocked at work, but the register new user page is.

Ah yes, the wonders of school/work firewalls. The most backwards of them all if anything is....I remember a few sites being like that when I was in high school with their firewall

Though I don't doubt the guy's medical bills, it's pretty obvious he was expecting to cash in on the fame of his collection and not necessarily on the contents. This sounds possible, if you can find someone ignorant (and rich) enough, but everyone in the gaming community can do the math and realizes what the true value is close to. It's unfortunate that a couple of idiots decided to waste his time and get his hopes up, but that's a result of the way he conducted the auction and all the "press" he showered himself with.

Same. It's idiotic. I hate dick-measuring contests.

I figured that as soon as a "world's largest collection" was declared by Guinness someone with (allegedly?) an even bigger collection would come out of the woodwork. And I bet if Mr. 16,000 games took the top spot we'd hear about a guy with 20,000 games a few months later.

Anyway I'd wager that the person who literally has the largest number of unique video games is a computer games collector we've never heard of. How many games were released on the ZX Spectrum alone? One site I found lists over 10,000. It's not unreasonable to think that there's some European collector with 15,000-20,000 Speccy / Commodore / Atari / Amstrad games. Or how about someone in Japan with piles of doujinshi / hentai games for NEC and Sharp computers?

Remind them that handhelds are superior to both.

Surprisingly there are people who would see no problem with that.
