Since I set both consoles horizontally, my Wii sits on top of my U.

Did any one complain this much when we couldn't use the Classic Controller to play GCN games on the Wii? I don't even mean to be sarcastic or anything, I just don't remember. It was pretty widely accepted that when you boot a GCN game on the Wii, that the Wii goes into "GCN mode" and only allows the use of a GCN controller. No Wii mote, or anything else. Not even internal memory for save games, you had to use GCN memory cards. It isn't hard to believe that the U is the same way with the Wii. With the exception of being able to use the Gamepad as a TV screen, but I think it's already been established why that's a different story.

Fucking stupid.
Don't you need motion control to play Wii games? Wii U gamepad doesn't have motion controls. How can you play Zack and Wiki on Wii U gamepad?

Maybe tell Nintendo to remove the off-TV play for Wii games. There, is everyone happy now? Same for Wii backwards compatibility for GCN games, where were you guys before? I really don't remember the complaints then. Yes it would be nice to have but that is nothing to get upset about.

You know what I think is "Stupid"? Not having backwards compatibility at all, Xbone and PS4. Hey, but you get the option to rebuy your games in digital format. Oh and look they work with your new controller and not the old ones. Nintendo you hear that? Make it so backwards compatibility is taken out and then instead upload Wii games to the VC but include gamepad support. Also make new only Wii U remote and nunchuck controllers and stop support of Wii remotes. Why would I like to be able to use the controllers I have when I can buy new ones?

They added it in an update, post console release, because people requested it. Months after its release people are having a sook. The internet is my #1 special happy place.

Meh, there have been plenty of consoles over the years that don't have BC and that's fine. What's annoying is that the Wii U's feels half-assed and, perhaps, deliberately gimped to boost VC sales.

-Wii U games can be operated with Wiimotes
-Wii games on the Wii U can be operated with Wiimotes
-The Wii U can output Wii games to the gamepad
-The gamepad can be operated with Wiimotes (which is quite ridiculous)

...yet the gamepad can't be made to play Wii games that are output to it!? If they could do all the rest of that stuff pretty easily, it seems like this last step would be relatively trivial...

I just raised the complaint because, for the first time since I got the system last month, I tired playing a Wii game on the gamepad while the wife was watching TV. I was annoyed to be told I had to go fetch a Wiimote in order to enter Wii mode  I incorrectly assumed that if a game is output to the gamepad, you could use the controls that are on that same pad (like with the PSP or Vita). Stupid me, I guess

Seriously... Are you trolling? If not, I just want to let you know, from a tech stand point, how ridiculous you sound right now.

Indeed.

The U's Gamepad and a PSP/Vita are two very different devices, even if they might look the same.

I am glad I am not the only one that was thinking this.

I think Dsh is trolling.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Sad thing is, I am not.

I'll admit to being clueless on the tech stuff, but to me it would seem fairly arbitrary to have some program running on the Wii U that translates the gamepad's button pressing signals into their proper Wiimote button pressing equivalent since both are communicating via BT with the Wii U. If I can use either a Wiimote or the Gamepad in a Wii U game, why can't I use either in a Wii game?

Try to help me understand the huge, costly technical barrier here. I really think it is a "we'd rather you buy these games again" kind of thing.

Flake, to your detailed post here, I don't follow why they'd have to do work for every single game. Can't Nintendo release a Wii U update that would tell the Wii U gamepad to send the standard Classic Controller+Wiimote BT signal to the Wii U when the system is in Wii mode?

I am trying to understand, really.
