Tomb Raider Definitive

Same game as before except damn it looks good. I hate to admit it but it was worth a re-buy. Though I got it with the 56 dollar trade credit I got at Gamestop for that crap called Watchdogs.

I know it is the PC version and yes I have that one. Just cool to play it like that on home console. Now that the price is dropping I am going to recommend getting it.

Mario Kart 8 is nothing short of amazing.

I'm getting pretty good at these games. Took me a combined total of 8 hours to finish both.

I like these ports. The map + mission objectives on the bottom screen is tremendously helpful and for that reason this may be the best Ys compilation for beginners.

Games Beaten: 2013 2012 2011 2010

Spent some time with my DSi XL the past few days, I forgot how much nicer/brighter the screen is compared to the 3DSXL. Continued my Mario Kart kick through to another set of credits and took a dozen runs or so at Death Label until I got the clear (this is one shmup I actually think I'm half-way decent at  ). Hadn't played either game in a few years, so it was fun to revisit them.

34.) Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)

(since I keep neglecting to list it)

Thoughts:
(90/90 stickers, three-starred through 150cc GP, barely touched Mirror courses or battle mode…so there’s more I could do, but I am not inclined to right now)

It’s Mario Kart in HD, what else is there to say? Nintendo has done a great job leveraging the Wii U’s hardware to make a game that looks nice and plays very well. I can’t compare it to every last Mario Kart release since I haven’t played all of them. Really, I hadn’t put much time into a home release of it since Mario Kart 64. Mario Kart 7 I basically bought with my 3DS XL and played a bunch of though, and this felt like a logical evolution of that.

Relative to, say, Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed, MK8 is pretty conservative. Mostly though, that’s a good thing I think. It’s not a perfect formula, but it’s a familiar one, and it’s probably getting closer to “fair” each iteration. I mean, computer players are still ruthless, and inevitably will get just the right item to knock you out of first on the last lap, but rubber-banding is not nearly as bad as on the original game.

There are a few things I’d question though. It seems like Nintendo wanted to de-clutter the UI maybe a little too much. The in-race HUD assumes you can/want to look at the Gamepad screen for standings and such. Outside of it, you need to start a Miiverse post to check what stickers you have, or manually check the saved ghost time to see if you’ve beaten that Time Trial.
The lack of proper battle tracks is also notable. I don’t want to say it was rushed, since most of the game exudes a high level of polish. Just, it stands in contrast to the rest of the game.

Games Beaten 2014:

1. GTA V(360)
2. Brothers(PSN)
3. Infamous(PS3)*
4. Infamous 2(PS3)
5. Remember Me(PS3 PS+ Freebie)
6. Shadow of the Colossus(PS3 HD Collection)*
7. Watch Dogs(PC)
8. Aliens Colonial Marines(360)

Been a while since I updated so I have probably forgotten a few :P.

Watchdogs

Beat it a few days after it launched. PC version was buggy as hell and I ended up having to download it twice since the initial download got corrupted :P. Overall it was an okay not great sandbox game story was okay, shooting was pretty run of the mill, driving was god awful, and the setting was okay not great. Basically it felt like it was a few years behind the curve. About the only redeeming feature of the game was hacking but there just wasn't enough variety there to really keep me interested. After a while I felt like every mission was just a repeat of something else I had done 4-5 times already and by exploiting a few of the more powerful hacks you can pretty much break the games difficulty.

Aliens Colonial Marines

Other then the pretty idiotic AI and confusing story it was a decent mindless shooter. Would be a great game to drag a few friends into for some Co-op fun. It didn't surpass my expectations going in but it was entertaining while it lasted.

There were a few glaring issues that bugged the piss out of me though. First of all I always play with subtitles it makes conversations easier to follow and prevents information from getting lost when an special effects or music gets to loud :P. However they did a piss poor job of implementing them first of all instead of having the sentences stream by as people are talking they just plop a nice big paragraph on the screen every time there is a conversation and the paragraphs are not timed right so they don't even keep up with the conversation :P. The other thing that bugged me was Multiplayer it is extremely unbalanced and I gave up after playing 3 rounds. Every match I landed in had a high level team vs. newbies and to add insult to injury the xeno upgrades were very unbalanced making the enemies bullet sponges that could kill you in damn near instantly once they got close :P.

Sigh it's sad that i had a hard time beating it on script kiddie but:

- katamari damancy
- super mario bros
- remember me new

Fun game, a little annoying that they didn't make it more open world but whatever....sad that this is only my third game for the year. Definitely doesn't make a top 10 list of games to play on ps3 but it was fun all in all just wish certain things would've been used more like the remixes and that ending I saw coming from a mile away but it still made me hurt a little inside...
My gameroom
My systems: NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, original gba, gba sp(001), ds lite, 3ds, vita, psp, PSone(101 model) ps2, ps3(320gb model), ps4, retron 5, and Dreamcast.

Got quite a few to update.

Psychonauts (Xbox)

Played for Together Retro. I got this game pretty much at its European release and have beat it a few times before this play through. I think it's still the best 3D platformer of that generation. Mario Sunshine might be technically better but Psychonauts outshines Nintendo's effort with more imaginative level design and world building. Really great game.

Ys 1 (PC)

Played for Summer Game Challenge. More thoughts in that thread. Really liked it even if some of the bosses made me rage. Great music as well.

Sonic Pocket Adventure (NGPC)

Beat it again. Still a great handheld Sonic game, probably even the best. I still can't do those bloody bonus rounds though. Just a delight to play and one of many reasons to get a NGPC in your collection. Here are some other reasons.

Fatal Fury: First Contact (NGPC)

"Beat" is always a subjective term when applied to fighters. Suffice to say I got to the credits with all the initial fighters. I'm kind of shocked how good this game is. I knew that the NGPC fighters were known for their quality but this game plays better than a lot of console fighters. It's so fluid and fast, it just puts everything else that came before it to shame. The clicky NGPC stick is perfect and the chibi-style art design works great. If I had one criticism it'd be the lack of modes. I think this is better than a lot of the Game Boy Advance fighters to be honest.

Pocket Tennis Color (NGPC)

Ack gave this one a good write up earlier on this year so I hunted down a copy. Again, there aren't many options, just tournament and exhibition, but that doesn't really matter. What does matter is that this is a exceptionally fun and easy to pick up tennis game with that trademark SNK visual style. It's not too challenging and as Ack pointed out it's pretty easy to game the opponent. It also seems some of the characters are worse than others and the two unlockables are kind of joke characters. I would have preferred a bit of fanservice here; I get the feeling Mai or Marco are avid tennis fans. Just a suggestion, SNK. Another essential NGPC pick up.

Out Run and Out Run (Saturn & SMS)

Outrun is so perfectly crafted and so concise it's almost like an "art game". You aren't racing in a lot of ways, you're exploring. It's just you and the road and that sublime musical score. Perfect. The SMS port is obviously a bit pared back but is still pretty damn good especially for the time. The tracks seem a touch longer somehow? Not sure why. But otherwise excellent.

Outrun 2019 (Mega Drive)

A sort of spiritual follow up. It's not "pure" Out Run for a couple of reasons: its stages don't branch quite as often and you aren't in a Ferrari. That and the music is a bit...meh. Generally though it's a bit better a game than I thought it was going to be. There isn't any racing or combat like previous Out Run offshoots. It's driving for the sake again but this time in a slightly dimmer, darker world. This is probably intentional. If I was being pretentious I'd say Out Run is a trek through one mans nostalgia whereas Outrun 2019 is through another mans fears for the future. Course, you get to do that driving in what looks like the Batmobile, so it isn't that shitty a future.

There are some impressive uses of pseudo-3D for overpasses and things and it handles well which is crucial. The only blemish, music aside, is the boost system. It builds up after you hit top speed and then activates automatically. Needless to say, on your first run you WILL boost off course and into a hole. You kind of have to strategically tap the accelerate button to stop yourself going full retard boost. It's awkward.

Otherwise though a pretty good game and worth owning if you're a Out Run fan.

Enduro Racer (SMS)

I can now beat this in less than eight minutes which is nice. Simple, easy, but still a lot of fun. And cheap as hell. I have a big soft spot for Enduro Racer.
