Always wanted to get into that series. Would you say this remake is a good spot to jump in? I recall hearing that some things were changed to make it more removed from the original and its sequels, but never bothered to research that further.

This remake game is the perfect spot to jump in, and Atlus meant for it to be. If you want to play Millennium Girl just like it was the first game, you can, you just choose Classic Mode and Expert Difficulty. If you want to play it more like a JRPG with a story, choose Story Mode and Standard Difficulty.dunpeal2064 wrote:Would you say this remake is a good spot to jump in? I went back and played the original Etrian Odyssey for DS last night, to compare it with the remake on 3DS. Some things were immediately apparent. Number one, the graphics on the 3DS version are leagues better, both in environments and in enemies. The enemies alone went from being unanimated sprites to being animated 3D models. The new OST is extremely robust compared to the original game's as well. The 3DS version still feels like the original game, just on steroids.
There are some really cool upgrades. For one thing, you can have the map automap as you walk around now, at least insofar as drawing the floors and walls. You have a fast travel system now, so the backtracking is cut way down. Grimoire stones are available now that let you multiclass characters. You have your own mansion now with a maid who will make you specialized buffing teas! The added on plot (and characters) in story mode has been a treat too. But all of the stuff I've just mentioned is entirely optional and can be turned off if you just want Classic Mode.
I for one absolutely love Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl thus far. But I did have to go and change the difficulty from Standard to Expert, because Standard was just too easy for me.

Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
Great breakdown, thanks!
So, my main goal would be to experience the game as close to the original as possible. I would want to draw my maps, and I would want the difficulty to be as hard as the games are known for.
But... will I actually miss out on story by choosing classic mode? Is story mode more of a "You've already played the game, here is some more in-depth character growth" kinda stuff?
I'll definitely snag this once Default is finished.

Play in Classic Mode on Expert Difficulty. In the options screen, disable all auto-map features. Now you'll have what you just said you wanted. Classic Mode does have its own story, but it's entirely threadbare and could be summarized in a single paragraph. Classic Mode is all about gameplay and gives no shits about a plot.dunpeal2064 wrote:So, my main goal would be to experience the game as close to the original as possible. A brand new plot introduced to the game itself.
Wonderful 2D animated cinematics that tell swaths of story.
Voiced over dialogue between your party members.
Pre-classed party characters who are the characters in the story (but you can still customize and level them up however you want).
The mansion with the tea maid.
I think the grimoire stones are only in the Story Mode as well.
Most importantly, you miss out on the huge new area added to the game, the Gladsheim Ruins, a seriously beautiful place:
Good news is, if you play Story Mode you still visit all the places you would visit in Classic Mode, and you still fight all the same bosses and enemies. And you also get to go to the Gladsheim Ruins and its unique bosses in tandem. You can still disable auto-map in Story Mode and do all the cartography you wish. Also all the optional quests in Classic Mode are still available in Story Mode, so you don't miss those.
My advice; Story Mode on Expert Difficulty. That's what I've been doing. It's been bliss so far. I wish I was playing right now.

Cool man. In the mean time, here's the official trailer to make the wait suck that much more:dunpeal2064 wrote:I will be enjoying this game very soon, hopefully.

You left out that the UI is so much better in the remake compared to the original.

I'm going to start playing The Elder Scroll series again. I'm going to finally complete Skyrim (my save data got lost after putting in around 120hrs). Then go back to Morrowind. My only issue with Morrowind is the lack of Waypoints. It is so tedious to have to read through all of your journal to find the quest you are on, just to see where you need to go. Then I will revisit Oblivion. TES is my favorite RPG series. They are the only games that I have spent upwards of 200 hours on and still haven't discovered everything. I can't wait until they eventually release TESVI.

They did improve the journal system in Morrowind with the later expansions, but I am sure there are mods out there that could really help the situation by adding a more comprehensive and easy to use journal system.Frag Mortuus wrote:I'm going to start playing The Elder Scroll series again. You should definitely revisit them. I at some point want to organize people to get together and play through the co-op campaign of BattleSpire....someday......somaday.
