Re: Who Won E3 2014?
The Ubisoft situation could have clearly been put as this. "Not having women in the game as a lead role was a design choice that we felt was conducive to the project as a whole, but we will take future input from our fans seriously in future projects."
People were up in arms that the main character in the new Far Cry was a male as well. I say that game developers need to branch out and include a larger variety of main characters in different positions instead of shoot first and ask questions later scenarios. Will the world come to a crashing halt if it is another white male? No.

At least until Skynet because self aware.dsheinem wrote:Lots of early games were politically sensitive/making political statements. You can't detach games and ideology, since people make games.flex wood wrote:anyone else remember when video games were fun escapism? I kinda take it like we were kids so didn't have a complete world view yet. Now that we are adults we see things differently. Like you stated adults aways had political issues with games. Now thanks to the internet we can share and spread these issues more easily.dsheinem wrote:Lots of early games were politically sensitive/making political statements. Well, some games are deliberately made to have social commentary. Thats a part of the fabric of that game.dsheinem wrote:Lots of early games were politically sensitive/making political statements. I think the stuff that gets more tiresome, is everything else that is politicized in a game that wasnt a political statement by the game.
But I guess we could just stay away from media and public discussions as these issues inevitably arise.

Actually lack of female leads is one (of many) reasons why I typically eschew current/next-gen games.Retrogamer0001 wrote:This is what you think about when you're looking at the new next-gen games for the first time?pepharytheworm wrote:Another thing I liked about Nintendo at E3 was the amount of female playable characters. Assassin's Creed Unity showed 4 males and even claimed adding women costs too much, where Hyrule Warriors showed one male and three females. Tomb Raider showed a woman who needed therapy from her ordeal, while realistic puts a bad message that women are weak and emotional when you don't see that often portrayed for males, did Nathan Drake have therapy? Where as Bayonetta 2 showed a strong female lead who while sexual doesn't seem objectified plus gets to dress as Peach, Samus and a female Link. Evole showed 3 males and one female where Splatoon had 50% female characters if not more. While the sexes were shown, not much racial diversity was (white, Asian or fictional). Miis in Smash Bros and created characters in Xenoblade is at least a start.

Doesn't Ys star a male?BoneSnapDeez wrote:Actually lack of female leads is one (of many) reasons why I typically eschew current/next-gen games.Retrogamer0001 wrote:This is what you think about when you're looking at the new next-gen games for the first time?pepharytheworm wrote:Another thing I liked about Nintendo at E3 was the amount of female playable characters. Yes but that doesn't excuse the fact that people are trying to hijack almost everything gaming related just so they can have a soap box to make people listen to their views.dsheinem wrote:Lots of early games were politically sensitive/making political statements. I'm talking about how Asscreed doesn't have a female character, how gay relationships aren't in some game. It is politicized after the fact by people that just want their opinion heard and want to use gaming as a springboard. If they really gave a shit they would be talking about how women are depicted in television and movies rather than complaining that this jumble of polygons supposedly has a dick. How not every single gay man is some annoying flamboyant. This social justice warrior (I really hate that phrase btw) stuff in video games isn't about equality, it seems to be more of a I just want myself represented, which comes down to being extremely selfish. It still leaves out too many groups. Kinda like when women got the right to vote.

Psst, maybe it's because these marginalized groups play video games?flex wood wrote:Yes but that doesn't excuse the fact that people are trying to hijack almost everything gaming related just so they can have a soap box to make people listen to their views.dsheinem wrote:Lots of early games were politically sensitive/making political statements. Why am I not surprised that a bunch of straight white guys can't figure out why representation and diversity matter to some people? It's easy to not give a shit when you're already represented in everything.
