Some days my sarcasm factor gets the best of me, so if I insulted anyone, then I apologize.

If cost was such a big factor for not including a playable woman character, and the demand for one is clearly there, then it's pretty much a given that the next installment in the series will plan for that.

But they aren't.... you think that all the staff making that game were wanting playable women not in that game? No they were, even their excuses touched on them wanting to add women. In the end cost is why women are't in the game... so the developers didn't make the game they wanted to.
My point, and probably many others as well, dont care what the genders are. Ubisoft has to decide if they will make much more money by adding a female avatar with its own assets and animations. Those do eat into a budget. And with the way they pump these games out so often, time may have been even more of a factor.

all i'm going to say about this is that it's very easy to not care what the genders are when you are a member of a traditionally well-represented group (white male). this is not an insult towards you or anyone else.

it's important to recognize that "privilege" doesn't necessarily mean that you get to do special things, it's that you get to do normal things without having to even bat an eyelash at it.

Or that some welcome not having politics or social issues invade all aspects of life or media. I like games with female leads just as much as if they have male leads, if the gameplay is good. Too much hang up on an avatar's gender. I actually tend to make some female characters in games I play, most recently my Destiny Alpha character. My main D3 character is female, and my favorite game of all time has a female lead (FFVI).

It just gets frustrating somewhat, when instead of focusing on the merits of a game for gameplay and such the focus is on avatar genders. Then, when some say we dont care or offer a differing view, or make a disagreeable commentary, onr gets attacked for it.

I think it's fair to call out bullshit responses like Ubi's "it would have taken too much time to add female characters". The actual answer was either:

1. They didn't think to add one
2. They didn't want to add one for some of any number of reasons

Neither of which makes them look good, so they use a bullshit "too hard" answer to hopefully get people off their back.

Narrative heavy games with interpersonal relationships do tend to tie the gender down at the start. Look at Persona 3 Portable; the social links that make up a big part of the game drastically change between a male and female protagonist. But the blanker the slate the character is, the less excuse you have of not putting in the small amount of effort it takes to add in options.

 anyone else remember when video games were fun escapism? Not bogged down politics and used as a platform for people to get their views heard.

Why don't people you know just not buy these games that don't allow you to play as your desired choice of amalgamation of pixels? No one is forcing anyone to play these games ffs. It's just retarfed to say that everyone should catering to MY views. I remember in Ass Creed 3 you could play as a female assassin in the multiplayer mode. Did anyone care? No. If they add a female character to Unity will anyone care? No. If one had been there in the first place would anyone be praising Ubi for being so progressive for having a female character? No. It would be "one isn't enough." "They are just pandering." yadda yadda yadda

Moles aren't going out and building mountains just to spite ants which is what most of this sounds like to me.

I honestly hope Ubi does add a female assassin. Just reskin a character to have long hair and say it's a girl. Just to shut everyone up.

This. I'm against oversensitive censorship, but this is clearly a case of not giving a fuck and coming up with lame excuses when you get called on your laziness.

Lots of early games were politically sensitive/making political statements. Missile Command is a well known one, but Nintendo of America's history of censoring would fit as well. You can't detach games and ideology, since people make games.
