I have a Dreamcast Controller that doesn't work
I recently purchased a second Dreamcast console NTSC Version 1, but for whatever reason one of the controllers doesn't work. It is an official controller that is made in Japan. When I insert the VMU, it does make a sound. The problem is that all other buttons don't work at all

Have you tried other controllers in that port? If I recall there's a resistor that goes bad on the console that causes problems with the controller ports (and it's a pretty simple fix). Otherwise i'd check the cable for any obvious damage.

The other controllers work fine on any port with the exception of the controller that is made in Japan.

If the console isn't the culprit, then i'd imagine you've got a problem with the cable on the controller. The odds of all buttons having an issue seems unlikely.
If you don't notice any damage on the cable, you could open the controller and pull the cable (it has a disconnect) and swap a known working one into it. Before opening the working controller, do a quick check on the inside for anything obvious that might be causing the controller not to work.

Yeah definitely open it up and see what you have to work with.
On another not does the VMU still have a functioning battery? If it was dead and you were getting a beep from it upon insertion that would at least confirm it's getting power. Also after the beep does VMU display stay on for a moment or immediately go off?

Try to clean the inside and outside of the controller input - that's likely the issue, the smallest bit of corrosion or general goo. You shouldn't need to open the controller.

For what it's worth I have one right now that disconnects all the time and had to stop using it. I believe it's a problem with the connector on the controller. Yours may be the same deal just a little worse off than mine.
