I'd love to get a site similar to The Cover Project going, but for manuals.

Only problem is if you REALLY want it to be good, you want to take the manual apart to scan and I don't see many people doing that :(

Or if you could get someone really good at graphic design to recreate it from scratch

don't see that happening either though :?

Yeah.

Then again, I have the hosting already. Worst case scenario I pay 10 bucks to register a domain for a year, it goes absolutely nowhere, and I waste a whopping 10 bucks.

Hell, I could start it on one of the domains I already have for all I care.

It'd also be much harder to get acceptable printing out of it, if that's the goal. 'course, PDFs would be neat either way.

Maybe a halfway point would be templates for basic "how to play" inserts/cards. Controller diagrams, move lists, the kinds of things that modern games would probably integrate into a tutorial or in-game reference, but might only be in the manual for older stuff.

Yeah, printing would be difficult compared to cover art. Not ridiculously so I don't think, but definitely more difficult.

I mean, a lot of games have text-only reproductions in one form or another (gamefaqs, sites dedicated to the system for smaller/older systems, etc) but with a lot of games there's sprites and such that would be REALLY useful to see.

The template idea is definitely a good one, but feels like it'd require significantly more work vs manual archiving.

I wouldn't underestimate the work necessary to get a clean PDF of a manual either. I've done book scanning for library archives before. Correcting color, cropping out or correcting flaws due to binding, and all that, it adds up.

See, the scanning has already been done by the good folks at www.replacementdocs.com

If you wanted to do something like The Cover Project you would have to remake the manuals in a publishing software to fit UGPCs and DVD cases.

Well, chalk up another useful site onto my radar.

Of course it's blocked here at work under the theory "Malicious sites"... sure it is. My work blocking is so stupid.

Thanks!

Maybe I have been too harsh on the Dreamcast.

The controller still sucks.

I kinda like the system a whole lot more than I used to though.
