If you look at the USMNT, our German players wouldn't be playing for US if a spot on the Germany roster was up for question. Diego Costa playing for Spain is also another strange coincidence. I think the tournament is exciting though, and I'm not quite sure what you even mean by soccer fruit salad. I think it's great to see players come back to their country and not play for their clubs. You get combinations like Belgium where's there's so much talent from a bunch of teams in the EPL, and then there's teams like Mexico where it's predominantly from Liga MX.
For some, league matches are the highest pinnacle in the soccer scene. Then there's those that believe the World Cup is the greatest level of play in soccer. I like it because it's a breath of fresh air from league play.
For example, Costa Rica has three players from each of the three top leagues, and a bunch of players from Costa Rican leagues. Right now they're ahead of Uruguay, who has one of the most prolific strikers in the world and a mix of players from the best leagues in the world.
World Cup 2014!
Re: World Cup 2014!
YEAH GO COASTA RICA!!!!
Re: World Cup 2014!
One of my siblings was there at the Madrid celebrations after they won one of those cups, and being the usual cynic I snorted what was the point if many of the team players weren't from the city or even the country. A good counter-point to the racists of course, but since we're still using the nationality system why not seek to hire more local players? Of course the endgame is lining the pockets of everybody except the fansBlu wrote:I think the tournament is exciting though, and I'm not quite sure what you even mean by soccer fruit salad.
Edit - and since we're in a soccer-y mood

Uruguay should pack up and leave. Hmmm I wonder if we're going to see fresh teams for the (semi)finals?

Yes and he was AMAZING. By far the best and most fair ref in the tournament so far.Blu wrote:Hey, the ref for the Colombia / Greece game was from the United States.
(though there's the issue of one goal where 3 players were offside, but imo since none of them came close to the ball then it was correct to count the goal)
This is nothing. Even though the final score is bad, this game could have easily gone differently. There wasn't that big of a difference between the 2 teams. You want to see creamed? You should have seen us in the 2008 Euro cup (defending champions) where we failed to score a single goal and lost all 3 games.Pulsar_t wrote:The former Eurodance champs got creamed(sorry)

This cup is awesome. Uruguay were starched. Who saw this coming? No one, that's who.

I fucking wanted to bet 5€ on Costa Rica winning (I'd win 75€) and I told my father to place the bet for me, but he didn't cause he considered it a waste of money......jfrost wrote:This cup is awesome. Uruguay were starched. Who saw this coming? No one, that's who.

Re: World Cup 2014!
I'll just be happy if we play a bit better. There was a duration of the game where we played HORRIBLY, and we really need to focus more on offense. But if we work on it, we can still go through. Specially since that was the hardest team in the group (in theory).Pulsar_t wrote: Hehe I did write sorry in advance :p Good luck next match!
What I don't understand is why the fuck did our coach keep our 2 best attackers out. He was forced to sub them in (subs number 1 and 2). Same thing for the captain who was sub number 3. Yeah he's 37 years old but he's the best player Greece has when it comes to controlling the midfield. Not to mention his shots outside the goal area can be lethal.
