Favorite Action-RPG's ?

Post by noiseredux »

I'm a big fan of the Zelda-style. And I loved Final Fantasy Adventure for gameboy. What are some other great Action RPG's? Any system... just let me know what are some of the best ?

I could never get into Neutopia

You ever notice, RPGs today play a lot more like Action RPGs of the past...

Yeah, I've noticed that lately most RPGs are going for more of an action feel. I think it's because the menu driven interfaces of days gone past are considered by many mainstream gamers as being dated and clunky. That's why we're seeing things like FFXII and XIII with the MMO style combat, when they have been menu driven for the past 10 iterations. Or there's Eternal Sonata, which is a hybrid of turn based and action. Personally I think both menu based and action based both have merit, as long as you play the game towards the strengths of each. For example, I think Persona 4 has some fantastic boss battles that make some good use of the fact that there are discrete turns. On the other hand, you have the Tales series, where you have much more control over when and how you get hit by enemy attacks, leading to a more active battle. One feels more cerebral while the other is more about reflexes and reading your opponent.

I do enjoy the old Action RPGs (like Zelda, etc) but when I want a pure RPG I tend to opt for something closer to Final Fantasy I than Final Fantasy X. Meaning that all the looooooooong cinematics and the intricate leveling up just seem to get in the way of natural, simple and fun gameplay.
