Wii-U thoughts so far
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
That controllers is merely wired to a Wiimote though, not to the console.

EXACTLY!!!isiolia wrote:That controllers is merely wired to a Wiimote though, not to the console.
If it was a wired controller that plugged into the U's front USB, that'd be OK. But the Wiimote dangling from a controller is one of the worst things ever.
I mean, I wasn't gonna buy one anyway, I already own GCN controllers. Nintendo's adapter makes much more sense.
Speaking of... Does any one know more details about these adapters. Sure, they'll work for Smash Bros. But does the U recognize it as a GCN controller? And thus, it's mapped appropriately for games that are coded to make use of it? Because how great would that be (for a lot of us) if you could use it for other games. Like Mario Kart. I only own one Pro controller, and two Classic Controllers (that will have a remote dangling from them). But I own a few GCN controllers. How great would it be if I could use the GCN controllers as Pro controllers for games like Mario Kart, 3D World, etc.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
As to the prices of games falling after a digital release, I thought the trend was that prices dropped prior to the release, most likely due to people wanting to unload their copies in fear of the prices dropping thus flooding the market with extra copies. Then the game comes out and the market value starts to return to normal due to there being less copies available or higher demand due to renewed interest. I would put my money on the less copies available option rather then increased interest after the release myself but that's probably debatable.

I've been watching Nintendo live and I'm just loving more and more of Splatoon. The developers are on the show so they are asking them all sorts of questions. I am really looking forward to this one!

I didn't say their sales issues were from the same problem. The solution isn't the same either. PS3 needed to lower the price and make the system seem relevant, instead of pompous. Wii U needs games, and they need to show that the games look great, and they are showing games, and a lot of them look very good. (That Zelda Wii U stuff was in-engine at 1080p, there's in-engine confirmation from Nintendo and Kotaku's source screenshots are 1080p, hopefully it still is when it comes out.)dsheinem wrote:Interesting thoughts.
I'd say the biggest difference between slow PS3 and slow WiiU numbers was price. The PS3 @$600 was in a heap of trouble from the start as the tech was pricey, HDTV adoption wasn't widespread yet, etc. Time and price drops were kind to it...I don't know that a Wii U price drop eould see the same boost...
What they're doing now, is getting other titles out there. Which a lot of which look good. I don't think they're "system sellers", but they're at least "system keepers". It looks like the "System Seller" games are coming out a couple a year. But that's fairly normal.

@Cronozilla
I have a feeling that the problem with Wii U is that all those people (or the majority) who were looking forward to play Zelda, Kart, and Smash Bros already bought the system. On the opposite of PS3, where the majority of the people who wanted to play MGS 4, GT, and God of War were waiting for PS3 to drop in price and for the good games to be released.
Let us not forget Wii U price is already attractive enough. At $290, its only $65 more expensive than a Vita. Thats like the price of 1 game at retail price.
Of course, I am only speculating and time will tell.
There are huge publishers behind the smart phone market including GTAs from Rockstar, Team 17 with Worms, EA with sport games and Plants vs Zombies, Epic with 3 releases of the exclusive Infinity Blade series,Activision with Call of Duties, Rayman from Ubisoft, Sonics/ Crazy Taxi/JetSet Radio/Sonic All Star racing from Sega, and even Final Fantasy.
Everything is already there for publishers to release full games par with DS/Vita. One publisher should take the step and the others will follow

Are you sure of that number? thats crazy large amount for 1 year. I thought there were only 2 billion cellphone users worldwide.isiolia wrote:
Android broke 1 billion device activations last year, and that's just new devices that are actually registered for service/etc.
I don't get the point, just because smart phones can do more than a DS or VIta it does not make them in competition with the DS or Vita? its a portable device that plays videogames. I do not see how is this not competition when Angry Birds sell their game for $1 yet they still make more money than Mario Kart on DS for example(I am making up numbers). The best selling 3DS games come in around 10 million (Pokemon X/Y is in the 12-13 range, others are slightly less than 10). Offhand, Angry Birds has had a combined download count around 2 billion or so. Obviously, the market for apps is very different, so it's not all directly comparable, but still.
I do not agree with this. I know what you mean, the huge amount of apps kind of burry the good games but I believe that is the fault of publishers because they simply do not advertise their iOS/Android releases.ZeroAX wrote:Apps are only good for amateur programmers/game developers to gain some valuable experience and as a hobby, and for big companies developing tie in games. The race to the bottom and really baddly designed app stores (on both OSs) killed the market for anyone willing to invest money in developing a game for them.

All of those are established franchises selling apps based on brand alone. Like the HORRIBLE Megaman X game, or the Sonic ports (which are unplayable do to touch screen controls).RCBH928 wrote:I do not agree with this. So how about those Wii-U thoughts so far, guys?
I've decided to add Splatoon to my list of demands, right alongside Captain Toad. True story: I like the idea of shooters but the bloodlust aspect of almost all of them turns me off. So Splatoon looks to be something I could happily spend some money on.
The details that Kotaku spilled yesterday also intrigue me, especially the idea that you can tap on a team mates location and automatically teleport to them.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I still think they are headed straight for "hope-for-Gamecube-numbers-as-best-case-scenario". As has been typical for the past few years now, their E3 stuff has been preaching to the choir (folks like most of those in this thread), but that choir is increasingly small...Flake wrote:So how about those Wii-U thoughts so far, guys?
As for me, I personally didn't see anything new that was announced with the possible exception of Zelda 2015 that I am excited about, at least not at this stage. I do applaud them for introducing one new Nintendo IP for the Wii U, though. Too bad other companies aren't really following suit and are, instead, sitting on games while waiting for numbers (http://www.polygon.com/2014/6/9/5793660 ... ii-u-games).
^And I hope no one translates that into "Nintendo hate". I adore plenty of Nintendo games and franchises old and new, I just think the company is making wrong turn after wrong turn when it comes to trying to find any real success with the Wii U, which I think will end up being their biggest console flop.
