I've got 8gb RAM, and thinking of upping to 16... basically because I can. But gaming wise, will I really notice any difference or is 8 really enough right now?

8 is plenty. Only upgrade if you got some birthday money or something burning a hole in your pocket.

Yeah mine maxes at 16. I mean 8 is serving me well. Just not sure if any upcoming games have 8 as a min that would benefit from more.

It is not Micro ATX, it is an ATX Q6600 build with DDR3 from 2007. It has run everything fine up until this year.

I built this early 2012, and have been upgrading it/building on it since. It's my baby:



Intel Core i7 2600
16gb of Kingston RAM
Asus GTX 560 GPU
100gb SSD by Corsair running the OS and video, 3D and photo editing software
2tb WD drive
1tb WD Drive
Windows 8.1
Dual Monitors, 27" Asus and 22" LG

Come tax time, I'm replacing that 1tb with a 4tb which is basically just for my YouTube videos. Each project folder runs close to 10gb each, and I'm very quickly running out of space.
I was also tossing up whether to upgrade my GPU or not, but since E3, I think the Uncharted 4 trailer has basically sold me a PS4 instead (and it didn't even have any gameplay!).

Thanks man, and yeah I bought nearly top shelf because I wanted it to be future proof (that and I came from a real nightmare of a computer beforehand). It seemed to be a good idea, as to this day it still runs as great as the day I bought it even when rendering full HD video and plenty of 3D images to boot.
I'm hoping it will last me until at least 2016.

16GB would help out with running windows faster. It'd allow you to better manage the pagefile, and that'd remove some reliance on HDD speed.

But it's more of a system thing, and will really benefit the system, not necessarily any specific application. You can do it on 8GB as well, but, if you go beyond what you tried to setup, it'll fail.

The basic advantage of huge amounts of memory isn't, does this one application require it, it's, how many applications can I have going? It can really help make the system easier and faster to use.
