we've negotiated with terrorists many times, so don't let that talking point fool you.

The admin has said in the past that they feel the new congressional notification clause is unconstitutional and often impactical (I tend to agree) - this may be an interesting test case for the courts.

Interesting article - "Computer Programmer Solved Gerrymandering in His Spare Time". If nothing else, it's a pretty interesting read, and basically anything is better than the system we have now, eh?

Almost 70 years since D-Day? And still the Red Army doesn't get the credit it deserves, outside of those who know more about history than what Hollywood sells.

That however doesn't diminish the heroism of those Allied troops who risked their lives to save Europe from the fascism that was gnawing at its very humanity.

I don't think anyone ignores the USSR's massive contribution to the war effort, but D-Day isn't about remembering all those that fought in the war, mainly those poor ordinary soldiers who risked so much that day. And, as far as I know, none of them were Russian.

oh gee

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-27726855

it sounds like this guy managed to defend himself (and everyone else in campus) against this gun nut without having a gun himself, but his (mentally disturbed) attacker did. Geee, if only there were more guns around.

Good on him. As long as mental illness remains a stigma, and those young isolated men are ignored by society at large, incidents like this will continue to happen, nay even increase in frequency. Everyone talks about gun control, but little attention is paid to the actual culprits. You'd have to be far gone to resort to lethal force.

Modern society can be a hellhole if you're not conditioned to sing its tunes.

This.

I don't know what the Red Army is, but I think I read in an Essay by George Orwell where he mentions or hints that Russia or Stalin are not as bad media in Europe and America made them sound like.

I am not an expert on the topic, but this made me wonder what general idea we got form propaganda that is absolutely wrong but no one knows it.

Stalin was an evil paranoid mofo, but if he were as bad as Hitler you'd have seen the whole of eastern Europe purged of its original inhabitants. The numbers are terrifying though. People were sacrificed in their millions in both the war effort and industrialisation of the USSR. Stalin's purges also deprived the country of thousands of highly-qualified officers and scientists.

(not disagreeing with your post (though I'd say he's close to "as bad as Hitler"), just mentioning a story that's related both to Stalin and the current situation in Ukraine, so people can read about it since it's not really well known in the west)
